It's not going to be difficult to complete against a product that doesn't sell, even within it's own category.

We'll see :>. Saying it doesn't make it so. The sales numbers are what matter and we won't be getting those for a while.

What I alluded to was that if the sales remain the same, then competing against it isn't going to be a major hurdle. Price is going to be a significant factor and that's what will make a major difference.

Let's say that the Surface Pro is the Ferrari of the tablet world, as some seem to believe, you aren't going to sell many Ferraris, but you will sell lots of pickup trucks, the latter being cheaper, more functional and easier to maintain. That's what it'll boil down to. And what are the pickup trucks of the computing world? I'd suggest laptops; cheaper, more functional and easier to maintain.

    Hi there
What's the surface Pro like with a conventional Wireless or Blue tooth keyboard -- I don't think I'd like the Ms folding one that comes with the device.

Using that analogy, if the Surface Pro is a Ferrari, then this laptop of mine is certainly no truck.

More like a space-craft by comparison (check its specs).

It wasn't cheaper than the Pro, more like double the price. But it can equal or exceed the Pro's battery life
and is in a whole different ball-park altogether when it comes to performance and functionality.

At this point in time, I wouldn't swap it for a Surface Pro (or any other large tablet) as it would simply be
unnecessary. Between my 4" Android phone and my 7" Android tab (which would have been a 7" Surface
RT if they'd been available at a comparable price) my mobile computing needs are pretty-well covered
and, in between them and this beastie (if ever need more power when mobile, which is rarely) I have a
Core 2 Duo laptop w/15.6" screen 3GB RAM 250HDD and full connectivity, running Win 7.

Oh, there is one area where the truck analogy does fit...you almost need one to move this
laptop, it is quite large and very heavy.

    Wenda.

The analogy wasn't quite right, but I tried to keep it relatively simple. When you consider the price of today's laptops, you can pick one up that runs Windows 8 for under $500, pick larger screens if you want, add RAM, change HDDs, change batteries, have more ports etc, a bit like the versatility of pickup trucks vs Ferraris.

    Hi there
as far as laptops are concerned I take my 11.5 inch ACER Aspire V105 i3 laptop when travelling rather than a huge powerful i7 17 inch monster -- in fact the i7 powered best just sits in a corner at home gathering dust -- I'll probably give it away to some deserving school / individual or whatever.

Upgrading the Acer to 8GB RAM and swapping the HDD for an SSD allows me to run anything I want on it and the HDMI out gives good HD resolution on a large monitor. Having a USB3 port is also great as well as an SD card slot -- I have a 32 GB micro sd card in this (via an SD ==>micro sd adapter).

This laptop initially with the 6GB RAM and a 500GB drive (which I now use as an external one via USB / SATA adapter) cost me 320 GBP from a Curry's Digital store store in the UK - Arndale center Manchester --Not the cheapest place to buy either (260 GBP when I got the UK's VAT back). So the cost to me for a decent laptop was less than 500 USD. I really haven't done anything where I actually NEED the i7 power on my other HUGE laptop and this one is thin, light and infinitely more portable.

Curry's digital and PC world are the same group in the UK BTW.

ACER Aspire V5-171 11.6" Laptop - Silver Deals | Pcworld

(Remember if you are from outside the UK prices always INCLUDE VAT which is 20% in the UK).

Now I can't see why I would get a surface pro rather than continue with the laptop.

If I were buying NOW I'd look at the surface pro but it still doesn't seem to me to be a viable proposition when you look at fully featured 11.5 inch laptops out there. It would cost me 300 - 400 USD MORE for less functionality -- at best the same functionality -- plus throw a keyboard in -- that's another chunk of dosh.

For the laptop I use a small portable Wireless Icelandic keyboard -- cost 18 USD.

Maybe by next Xmas if prices move in the right direction I'll visit the tablet scene again --however I'm not biting at the moment -- and this is largely based on PRICE so I'll have to agree with Ray8 here.

    Cheers

How on earth do you find it better to have the need to have to hold your device with one hand to use it..?? It's just not logical.

Well I guess the best way to find out if its logical is to ask the roughly 200 million tablet owners. I'll explain it this way, what's the best way to hold a smartphone, one hand, a bigger smartphone, one hand, a phablet, one hand, a tablet, one hand, a 17" laptop, two hands, a 15" laptop, two hands, any laptop, two hands.

I think the problem on this forum, not enough understand tablets and what they're used for.
