What kind of weird idea of choice is that.
I've never said I just want Windows, if I said that my name would be Ray8 he buys everything Windows. All I want is for Microsoft to stay strong because that gives us more choice through OEMs.

If they stay on the Desktop path they are doomed. I don't want Apple or Google to die, I just don't want either to shift the balance too much.
Everything has its season, and right now that is mobile getting all the press being the new kid on the block with all the new gizmos and gadgets. Desktop isn't going anywhere, and will be viable for a good long while to come. Why do you think Google is making some rumor noise about possibly pushing Chrome OS outward towards full-fledged desktop applications? The one thing Chromebook Pixel has shown them is you can't sell half a machine, no matter how pretty the curtains. If they're actually going to be a real player in the laptop/PC arena, their software needs to grow beyond kludged-up webpages.

Never forget that most of the major third-party software companies primarily develop for Windows first and foremost. Microsoft sure doesn't forget as thats its bread and butter. Those that don't primarily develop for Windows, develop for consoles. There are some companies starting to dabble in apps(hi Adobe Photoshop), but they always cover their PC Suite first and foremost.

I don't think we have to worry about MS going anywhere. They will have a choice in this market for a very long time.

Truth. And the longer Apple and Google play in the pie-in-the-sky device arena and keep chasing stock price, the better for Microsoft. The thing about flying high like that, you don't have a parachute(as Apple is finding out), if it suddenly goes south. Brin and Page are smart enough to understand that. Cook? Not so much.

You always need to remember its best and easiest to play Australia in a game of Risk, not Asia. Apple right now is Asia and getting attacked from all sides. Microsoft is Australia in that they may be smallish at the moment, but their base is very easy to defend. It is no simple task to cover decades of API work(even pitching a lot of the obsolete stuff out) if Google wants to take some shots at getting up in Microsoft-land and convincing developers to come with. It would be nice if someone tried though as Apple is basically cedeing the business to Microsoft.

The funny part, now that I think about it. The main reason why Apple may want no part of updating the Macbook and Mac and why they're trying to put the PC out to pasture is simple. They don't get a cut. If they update their stuff, they'll end up creating the same end-around that Microsoft is going to face and not be able to rake 20-30% of developer revenue for full-blown applications.

If they can convince everybody that everybody needs to make apps, they get huge cut. Applications, they get nothing. I could easily see that as being their reasoning.

Be interesting to see how many more months it can keep going at that sort of rate.

I think that the rush is over and new sales will be less than half of that next month what you call a pent up demand due to the RT coming out first. Who would buy a surface for that price and you cannot change the battery they will only last a few years at most.

I don't agree. SP is a replacement for a laptop. RT was meant to compete directly with iPad. The RT was never, ever a consideration for those who needed the versatility the SP provides.

As such, as laptops get wound down and/or people look at mobile purchases, they're going to gravitate to the versatility the Surface Pro provides. As such, this provides a steady sales stream over time. At the same time, they're only in two territories atm(US & Canada). There is a lot of world to expand to. I can also see a lot of territories simply waiting for the device as opposed to kneejerking to an OEM. People want quality and great design in mobile products and are willing to pay for it. Apple proved that.

Even if sales dropped to say 200-300k a month here in the US/Canada, thats Ballmer Backflip material as thats simply minting money given the price. When your profit per device is more than an iPad even sells for, you're making major bank.

    There's this:

As often as Microsoft pitches the Surface and Surface Pro as tablets for getting work done, corporate customers haven't had an easy way to order the devices by the bushel.
Microsoft lets companies buy Surface tablets in bulk

    But then:

The United States Department of Defense has a pending purchase order for more than half a million iOS devices, according to a new report. ’Well-placed sources’ say the government plans to purchase in upwards of 650,000 iPhones, iPads and iPod touches as part of an ongoing effort to update and mobilize its technologies…
