Easy enough to fix - simply offer Classic UI at install time. Then all the new desktops/laptops/tablets/etc being offered atm could be set up with the Modern UI for touch screen and Classic for non touch screen.

Also, maintain your existing market with current Win7 users - many of them would upgrade.

That should stop (or certainly greatly reduce) many of the negative comments being posted here and in the media.

It's not that bad, it's people's perception which is not helped by the media, the continual bagging and endless put downs would help to put people off.

I personally think Microsoft should have done something like this years ago, unfortunately Microsoft has a tough time trying to sell anything.

From what I've seen it's more previous users that are the problem not new users, even a lot of Mac users like it.

I just really hope they don't make the mistake of brining back the Start Menu, maybe they can make that an add on along with WMC.

M$ has a near monopoly on the PC OS market it does not know how to sell a new OS it just tries to shove it down your throat.

It's always the media and first impressions that count. I bought a laptop with Vista installed and after getting rid of all the dross it wasn't anything like as bad as folks would have you believe. Certainly more stable than XP but that could just have been down to newer machinery.

Problem for MS was the mud stuck. Whether that was the fault of MS, or the OEM's skimping on hardware is an irrelevance. Vista got itself a bad name and Win8 is going in the same direction.

Just give folks the choice at install time and you'll find many of the negatives will go away. I'm sure Win8 is a good OS - played with it myself - not impressed with the washed out colours but that's a personal view. But at the moment MS are pushing water uphill with their bare hands and that could be sorted very easily. Sure you can add a third party app to get the start menu back but it's first impressions. And many of those are negative. All unnecessary IMO especially with the resources available to MS.

I've bought every Windows edition from day one, never had a problem with Vista, never had a problem with ME, but I did have a lot of problems with Windows 98 although it did get better towards the end.

I don't know what they've got to do to get people on board, I just hope they don't go backwards.

it wouldn't get much of a response. people there generally like it in there are they aren't that many people who really don't like it. so you won't find a situation where many come in complaining about things and a few supporters just talk about how great it is and we're not seeing the point.
Don't forget that figures from many sources back up the claim that people love W7.
Look at its current market share and adoption rates.

People that love W8 are the only ones claiming it's a runaway success (apart from MS).

That's your opinion and it isn't supported by facts.
Figures from many sources refute your claim (current market share and adoption rates).

W7 has the title of fastest selling OS in history.
    Search for "fastest selling OS".

I admit they've had to go backwards a little, but even in the Army it sometimes pays to retreat to win the Battle.

But by going backwards a bit in some areas they've made a faster and more secure OS, able to be put onto a lot more machines.

Oooohh the Start Menus gone I can't do any work, I can boot faster onto the Desktop, I hate that, I don't know how to shut the machine down, it hasn't got as many pretty colours as it had before and I'm a Professional Accountant I need those colours. I hate the lock screen, damn I've run out of hates, please add your own. Oh I hate baldy CEOs.
