I thought so, thanks. I'm surprised that Softpedia of all people didn't test further before publishing that. Everyone should post comments at the bottom of that article to refute it. I just did although it disappeared, presumably for someone to approve it.

The first one was on a desktop tower.
Right now I'm testing it on my laptop to see how it goes.

I'll post back the results when I'm ready.

I noticed the Softpedia person got it via WU - I was rather surprised at that. I downloaded mine simply because WU wasn't offering it to me. I don't see how that could make a difference but I suppose anything is possible.
Did WU offer it to you or not?

It works on my laptop as well!
All drivers updated, the transparency/Aero works fine with IE10 open. The rest of the browsers are OK as well.

No it was not on the updates list yet.
I got it from post #2 above (Dave44) from the link.

Here's a screenshot of the version number and the Aero transparency enabled.

    All works fine.

The version from Win Update should be the same I guess but it's more likely the different hardware people have that can cause trouble.

    Hi there
I am just about to WIPE W7 off my machines -- Having got used to W8 everything about W7 seems to run as slow as molasses - OK I've had to adjust a little bit to doing things SLIGHTLY (and ever so slightly) differently and there is a bit of extra set up time but I can honestly say I don't miss W7 one bit any more. Also with custom toolbars I don't even miss the menu any more.

To me now W7 seems a "bit long in the tooth" these days and I can only see myself using it in future if I have to at work or if I'm using a work supplied laptop but even in these cases - :

For Remote working --no probs at all since using the work VPN it really doesn't matter what OS you have on your OWN computer at home since once you are on the VPN you are essentially using whatever OS the work servers provide.

So for my OWN Machines I've really no reason to use W7 any more --and I really DO like the W8 to go feature (unfortunately it's only available for Enterprise W8 which seems a bit strange as roving consultants could make serious use of this).

    Cheers

Not to worry, I hear this more and more lately.
I'm happy myself with the Win8 machine I have: all works fine + the Start Screen has all possible icons and keeps my desktop more empty.

I'm gonna test W8 on my older Vista machine: that's a laptop that reached retirement but you can expect anything with newer OS and drivers.

    Hi there
If you want a reasonable replacement to the start menu WITHOUT using any 3rd party apps have a look at my post in the W7 Forums -- I've made a couple of CUSTOM toolbars which bring up menus rather like the old W7 system but infinitely more "customisable" and IMO much better too.

(Mind you saying ANYTHING NICE about W8 on the W7 Forum almost qualifies you for PUBLIC EXECUTION !!).

Ignore the title -- just read the post as it explains how to "99% replicate" the menu.

Hi! I want to prevent apps (typically old games) from lowering the desktop resolution. I often change to another app to check out something, and in this case the desktop also runs in the silly low resolution. Plus the window sizes and the icon locations are permanently changed.
