Microsoft job post gives more info about 'Windows Blue'

A new job posting by the company verifies that Windows Blue will include user experience improvements, not just under-the-covers interface tweaks. Bonus: There's a reference to "Windows Phone Blue" on Microsoft's job site, too.

If there's any doubt that the Windows client team is laser-focused on the coming Blue refresh of Windows 8, a new Microsoft job post makes it even plainer.

A February 15 post for a software development engineer in test on the Microsoft Careers site (to which Charon at Ma-config.com alerted me), mentions "Windows Blue." According to that posting, the Core Experience team in Windows Sustained Engineering (WinSE) is involved in making improvements to the start screen, application lifecycle, windowing and personalization. Windows Blue will "build on and improve" these OS components, the posting says.

Here's an excerpt:

Microsoft better not charge for this update... I feel they're beginning to follow the footsteps of Apple. Fixes for faults in Windows 8 should be free.

Yep, it was Microsoft Plus for Windows 95. To me, that was more of an expansion pack, but it is along the same idea though.

Hi there
Some people must have been smoking too much of that "funny smelling tobacco" or "Waccy Baccy" that you get in Amsterdam's famous Coffee Shops.

Who in a Million years would even THINK of attempting to use EXCEL on a small mobile phone 4 inch screen other than for the most trivial of calculations.

Fine to have a reasonably common interface for most devices assuming its fit for purpose - but trying to develop a mobile EXCEL for phones -- what an imbecilic idea.

Cheers

Yeah,

We'll just have to see what it becomes.

Personally I think PowerPoint is more suited for this because a slide has less text/tables.

It already exists! ;)

I have Excel on my Windows Phone 7.5 phone (and I guess it's in WP8 and probably WP7.0). I wouldn't want to create a spreadsheet on my phone or do any editing beyond very basic and minimal changes, and you can forget macros and such like, but it does at least allow me to look at a spreadsheet that's been saved on my Skydrive or been emailed to me.

Hi there
I still don't think EXCEL on a phone is of any use --apart from perhaps a confirmation that someone has actually PRODUCED (probably on a desktop / laptop somewhere) a spread sheet that you might want for your office -- or simply as an attachment that you can then load to a "Proper" computer later.

Power point possibly has some use in "display mode" -- but even a proper word processor like Word is a dog to use properly on a phone --simple text like notepad is really all that's even remotely feasible.

Doing fully fledged office type applications on a 4 inch screen -- no thanks -- I grumble these days even at work if I can't get at least a 23 inch screen.

(In these days of "Political correctness" etc it could be "against my human rights" to have a screen that might over the probable life time of the universe cause me to have some incredibly minor eye problem that is about as hard to detect as the Higgs Boson particle). :dinesh:

For anybody interested :

HowStuffWorks "What exactly is the Higgs boson?"

That should be around the ideal screen size. I also can live with 27 inch, thank you. But if you still increase the size on a desktop above 30-40 inch, focus is lost because the eyes can't follow enough. At least that's how I see it.

Then again, we know how annoying the small screens are because mostly the UI of software doesn't fit entirely.
Ever saw a 1024x768 window with options on 800x600 or lower (no graphic drivers for instance) and the OK button is not seen anywhere? Something like that. So I believe some of the modern small screens to be capable of HD resolution but then again... text is to small to read and we 'melt' our eyes trying.

I think that's up to the developers of said applications. It will take a lot more work because Windows 8 and RT, I think, are very different and they will require the developers to create two separate applications at once; lots of work.
