    Steve Balmer:

We now have the perfect product, absolutely foolproof, so we will put all of our eggs in the one basket.

Yep, the product is not right.

They should have known that before they released it.

I think you were one of the very many telling them that - for quite a long while weren't you Ray?

What would some of these people do is Ms stopped tomorrow -- a good 80% of the worlds business is still done with Windows -- I'd like to see some of these "Nay Sayers" suddenly thrown into having to use Linux and "Ms Office Clones" to get their daily work done --in fact I'll bet the article linked to was probably written using Ms Word anyway.

My reservation about Windows 9 / Windows blue or whatever is not that it will be FREE --Ms doesn't do business that way -- but it will operate on the "Sucker Principle" -- It will be a subscription based model with what appears to be a low subscription -- which however you cut it would be a really poor deal for consumers.

Just look at mobile phone contracts --how many people lock themselves into ridiculous contracts just to get a decent phone without realizing it that in 3 years this would have cost them over 1200 USD in some cases -- whereas the could have quite easily paid a one off csot of around 450 USD for even the best phone out their and used a Pay as you Go type of service. With decent Wifi all over the place who really needs 500 mins talk time etc etc on the phone contracts --use a Pay as you Go and a service like SKYPE on Wifi.

But when it comes to money people usually aren't very good at calculating Real Interest or monthly subscriptions over a period.
(In the UK people still are paying these Hideous Pay Day loan companies interest rates at over 3,000 % - yes 3 THOUSAND % --not a typeo -- and they are suckered in by commercials of little old ladies moving sliders up and down saying how much money do you want, what period and then giving them the cost which for companies like WONGA is usually well over 3,000%).

I think people have already been suckered into buying a new Windows version every couple or so years....
    Hi there
still using some quite expensive hardware built circa 1985 on Windows 2003 Server (as a VM) and this is still going strong -- no way am I stopping using this in the near future -- the manufacturer has long since gone out of business -- replacement hardware --if I could even find it would cost me around 15 - 20,000 USD plus whatever a new application costs.

I also have some Record (Vinyl) cutting hardware running on the W2K3 VM -- I sometimes make some Vinyls for people with personalized custom labels too -- I rip from say a CD / Ipod type device and via DAC's (Digital to Analog converters)the hardware creates 33.33 rpm / 45 rpm or even 78 rpm's at choice.

Sourcing Blank Vinyls used to be a bit of a problem -- Factory in Taiwan supplies what I need very cheaply --even old 10 inch 78 blanks !!

However if you want to try this stuff out yourself you can get these in Europe too --although much more expensive at around 4.00 EUR a pop.

    For example.

    12" VINYL RECORD CUTTING BLANKS

This stuff isn't going on Windows 8 any time soon -- and it's great fun to do -- a REAL use of a computer !!!..

    Cheers

Microsoft's handling of mobile is likely the worst mistake the company ever made. Microsoft built and released a smartphone years before the release of the iPhone. But it hamstrung it by putting an operating system on it that essentially mimicked Windows, rather than starting from scratch and thinking what a mobile operating system should be. Apple, rather than copy the Mac OS, designed an operating system specifically for smartphones.
Is Microsoft now doing the reverse, in where they appear to be heading?
