Huge Pent Up Demand for Windows 8 Tablets

As many as 200 million IT workers may be holding out for the right Windows 8 tablet, Forrester says.

Market research firm Forrester polled nearly 10,000 IT workers, and out of those surveyed, more showed an interest in a Windows 8 tablet than an iPad, ReadWrite.com reports. Only 2 percent said they already own a Windows 8 tablet, but 32 percent said they wanted one. As for the iPad, 26 percent polled said they'd like to own one (and 12 percent pointed to Android).

How Forrester made the leap to 200 million IT workers wanting a Windows 8 tablet, we're not really sure.

I don't need an analyst to tell me that, I told you I spend a lot of time on forums, and I've told you before, I've seen guys with iPads, some with two, dying to get their hands on these things.

Not only guys with iPads but Android tablets as well saying they can't wait for these things. Look I'm not going to rubbish these other tablets altogether they serve a purpose and both are quite good at what they do, but lets face it neither can do what Windows can do.

I'm getting older and out of the workforce so I don't absolutely need all the stuff Windows can do, but I can certainly see the sense in a wholly interwoven ecosystem.

Also I have a few PCs and tablets and the ability to leave one and go onto another where I left off is really appealing to me, and so it should be to anyone.

200 million.

How did they work that out?

Perhaps they just extrapolated from the 32% of their sample.

If they are doing that, then Apple at 26% would mean more than 160 million want an ipad ( on top of the 75m or so that already have them ).

What does that mean ? Are 160m+ suddenly going to rush out and buy an ipad over the next few weeks?

If that is the case, Uncle Tim had better start stocking up the shelves right away.

Whatever, it might indicate those 32% are at least prepared to have a look/consider it.

What I found funny was the reference to 200 million IT workers. Considering that the world's population is just under 7000 million, that's a lot of IT workers per head of population (1:35). Now if you start to be somewhat ruthless with who and where people are likely to even see a Windows tablet, let alone afford one, then the figure could conceivably drop to around half that, if not a lot more. So now we have one IT worker per 17 other workers/non-workers.

Maybe their definition of IT worker includes anyone who happens to use a computer, cash register, point of sale device etc. Maybe they just pulled figures from a dark, wet, place?

I have no idea how they came up with that.

Perhaps it is a misprint with an extra zero.

LOL Ray, well, if you are looking at it like that:

If 32% of their sample of IT workers extrapolates to 200m , then there must be more than 3 times that many IT workers. Well over 600m.

If the entire population is 7bn, exclude those who are not in work - e.g. under 18 and over 65, exclude those who barely even have electricity...

Although it actually says information workers.

That makes it look even more optimistic.

I would imagine they tried to extrapolate to the world working population.

Look for once I agree with you guys, these figures are absolutely outrageous, there's just no way on this planet that there would be anywhere near that amount of IT workers wanting one. What I would believe to be a more believable figure is 199.9 million give or take .1

I kid, I kid, look fellas, I don't know how successful Microsoft is going to be with this or even Windows 8, what I do know is that a lot of people want the Surface Pro and people are warming up slowly to Windows 8. If they can pull this off it will be with no thanks to the Media, it will be by sheer hard work, they certainly aren't getting a free ride.

Actually I've just finished talking to my brother for a couple of hours and I think I've discovered another reason why they have gone the Windows 8 way, if I'm right it should work out very, very lucrative for Microsoft. I don't know if they did it intentionally or it's just a fluke but either way they stand to gain.

Many a true word said in jest.

And it sounds like maybe there are some vested interests driving the almost evangelical promotion and defence of Windows 8/Surface.

Hi there
Well since that report DIDN'T come from Gartner's it has a passably decent chance of being essentially correct although the volumes it is speaking about appear a bit optimistic.

Users like to bring their own devices to the workplace especially as these days it's not uncommon for the user to have a HUGELY better computer than the office provided one.

Multi-Platform is definitely where it's at -- at work probably the only thing you might need in the future is a decently large size monitor.

Of course security aspects of "Bring your Own device" needs to be sorted out --not a trivial task, and of course there's always the legal problem of a user running illegal or pirated software on their own device -- and how that little problem will be solved I've no idea since most of these network systems will obviously allow connection to the Work network via say a VPN or RDP type connection but what happens when the user switches into Local Mode.

However I'm sure a decent tablet that can function as a competent PC when required - especially if supplied with a proper docking station will get plenty of votes from all sides of a business.

From the Canadian pricing

1000 CDN ==>633 GBP ===>680 EUR (before tax).

Seems actually quite reasonable to me --especially if you are self employed or are running some type of business where you can recoup the usually Horrendously high rates of VAT in Europe --.

I'm sure these things can be sourced cheaper in the future from places like Hong Kong etc. If Ms wants these things to sell decently then restricting them only to the Ms store won't be a good idea -- if it's too hard or expensive to get a product people will just find something else.

Cheers
jimbo

They are available at several outlets here in Canada.

Hi there
I'm sure Canada has some decent tax cutting rules for businesses and self employed people such as sales tax rebates, capital allowances etc etc. Most countries do --the problem usually is in finding good enough accountants who can wade through usually very complex rules.

It will be interesting to see the ist 6 months sales volumes of the Ms surface pro --particularly amongst the business sector -- including very small businesses and self employed people.

While it won't be stellar I suspect the Surface Pro will do rather better than most of the prophets of doom on this Forum seem to indicate.

The wretched keyboard would have to go but a decent USB3 Hub is cheap enough so when you want a keyboard there's nothing wrong with a conventional Wireless USB one --probably even with the cost of the USB3 Hub would be cheaper than the Ms keyboard. !!!

You also wouldn't need Office 2013 -- Office 2007 will run perfectly on it and student / teacher edition can be sourced very cheaply --around 35 USD so that cuts down the price even more. Office 2007 is 100% fine these days for pretty well any work document I can think of -- I have Office 2010 - since I get two copies -- a "Flemish" version I got at work (in Brussels Belgium) and the English version I got from TechNet -- but I would have been perfectly happy with Office 2007. I don't like Office 2013 one bit and I certainly have no intention of paying a monthly subscription for things like Office 365.

All in all compared to an equivalent Ultrabook the Surface Pro is beginning to look quite attractive. Remember also to pack more components into these types of devices costs more so you can't really compare the price of the Surface pro exactly with a conventional PC or even a laptop.

Cheers

HAHA! Just goes to show that naysayers will say ANYTHING that borderlines paranoia to beat down any growth of Windows 8 and tablet PCs!

Lots of IT people want a Windows tablet? What?! Preposterous! They were paid by Microsoft! No one can like Windows 8! It's awful! It's full of advertisements! I don't like it and no one likes it and that's that!

Geez....

I have to wonder what it'd be like to use Windows on a 7 inch screen. Seems a tad too small... But could be possible...
