Windows sales boost Microsoft revenue, but profit declines

Microsoft credited its Windows overhaul for a boost in quarterly sales when it announced earnings Thursday, as new software and hardware tied to the Windows 8 launch helped the company enjoy higher revenue in its September-to-December quarter.

Though Microsoft’s second-fiscal-quarter profit declined, revenue increased, helped by the company’s Windows division, where sales shot up more than 20 percent year on year.

Microsoft revenue increased 2.7 percent to $21.46 billion in the quarter ended Dec. 31, 2012.

Net income shrunk to $6.38 billion, or 76 cents per share, from $6.62 billion, or 78 cents per share, in 2011’s second fiscal quarter, the company said on Thursday.

    Hi there
This isn't surprising at all -- a lot of the costs were in hardware development etc etc.
As I keep re-iterating markets worry about FUTURE projections -- what happened yesterday is 100% IRRELEVANT.

That's why the 2nd largest company (by cash) in the world -- our favourite "Fruit Company" has been absolutely CRUCIFIED by the market in the last few days --shares down now around 35 - 40% in the last 6 months - whereas the future prospects and earnings for Ms look - while not stellar - quite reasonable and their long term future seems more assured than APPLE -- into whose traditional market new upstarts like SAMSUNG are eating into big time. Not only that Samsung also makes things like chips for its phones etc so controls the whole kybosh too.

You can see from the Market graphs of AAPL and MSFT exactly what's going on. MSFT - relatively stable and will nudge upwards, AAPL -- who knows --might be oversold so could experience a short term "Dead cat bounce" rally but future prognosis doesn't look good -- new Ipad, new Iphone -- Boring-- boring- etc. Apple's problem now it's not "Cool" anymore.

Maybe Ms was actually correct in delaying the Surface Pro when logic would normally have expected it to appear around XMAS.

Enc screenshots of AAPL and MSFT recent market data

    Cheers

Spot-on jimbo. Stock price is about the future, not about what the company did yesterday (or even today).

I thought Bill Gates comments on Windows 8 and Surface were interesting, "Windows 8 has done well. Surface computer is doing well." I'm sure this helped calm investor concerns about future MS earnings.
