Oracle releases software update to fix Java vulnerability

Oracle released an emergency software update today to fix a security vulnerability in its Java software that could allow attackers to break into computers.

The update, which is available on Oracle's Web site, fixes a critical vulnerability in Oracle's Java 7 that could allow a remote, unauthenticated attacker to execute arbitrary code. The attack can be induced if someone visits a Web site that's been set up with malicious code to take advantage of the hole.

Thanks! I applied the update on my main PC last night (I skipped DEV and QA and went right to Prod)!

And yet I still can't find any reason to have Java installed on my system.

Just joking. There are a few things that still require Java these days but... yeah.

Do we have any substantiated reports of a system being exploited or is this just hype and hyperbole? Thanks!

Last I read, it only affected the JDK version of Java.

US-CERT Continues to Recommend Disabling Java After Oracle Issues Patch (January 14 & 16, 2013) Although Oracle has released a patch for a vulnerability in Java that was being actively exploited, the US Department of Homeland Security's
(DHS's) US Computer Emergency Response Team (US-CERT) is still urging users to disable Java in their browsers. A note from US-CERT said, "This and previous Java vulnerabilities have been widely targeted by attackers, and new Java vulnerabilities are likely to be discovered," and recommends that users disable Java "until adequate updates are available."
