Fast Startup is one of the new features integrated into Microsoft’s Windows 8 operating system that basically allows Windows to boost faster on a dual-boot configuration.

The problem is that the tool puts locally stored data at risk when the user loads the second operating system, in most cases a Linux distribution.

The explanation is as simple as it could be. In dual-boot configurations, the Fast Startup option doesn’t shut down Windows 8 completely, but only forces it to enter a hibernation mode that allows it to reboot a bit quicker when the users sign out from the other operating system.

Since this is nothing more than a hibernation state, Windows 8 will continue to store Windows session information, including file system data belonging to FAT and NTFS partitions.

So let me get this straight, Linux will automatically futz with NTFS partitions without the user's intervention or consent? That's what I'm getting.

Retrieving data from Windows is one of the main uses for Linux.
Whenever Windows doesn't want to cooperate, I fire up Linux and Windows no longer has any say.

An obvious simple fix would be to just turn the Hybrid/Hibernate option off.

An obvious simple fix would be to just turn the Hybrid/Hibernate option off.

I keep a distro or two custom installed on a usb flash drives just for that purpose. But you can just as well boot live even to make a few changes even with system files. With changing the startup sound in 7 you would boot live to rename the imageres.dll to .bak for example or even nuke the original once you have it backed up somewhere else and then copy the new version for the new sound back into the System32 folder there.

Likewise once you are booted into the other OS all Windows processes are no longer running to say "get in the way" on 8 as well as any previous version. Since you have ready access to MS volumes when booted in some but all Linux distros like ubuntu, Zorin OS, Puppy Linux, Knoppix(live dvd only - Debian), Linux Mint and Linux Mint Debian(two releases first Sept 2010 and Feb. 2012 updated release) are great candidates for data rescue purposes as well as seeing any number of possible changes made.
