Microsoft to kill the Messenger on March 15

Beware the Ides of March if you are a user of Microsoft's Windows Messenger Live.

Microsoft announced last November it would soon retire its instant messaging client in favor Skype, which Microsoft acquired in October 2011. But today it began informing Messenger users that the service would go dark for the majority of users on March 15.

    Hello,
On 15th March 2013 we are retiring the existing Messenger service globally (except for mainland China where Messenger will continue to be available) and bringing the great features of Messenger and Skype together. Update to Skype and sign in using a Microsoft Account (same as your Messenger ID) and all your Messenger contacts will be at your fingertips. You'll be able to instant message and video chat with them just like before, and also discover new ways of staying in touch with Skype on your mobile and tablet.
    Yours sincerely,
    The Messenger Team

Damn about time, I haven't used MSN in ages. Rarely use Skype but hopefully will start using it more often now.

I "upgraded" WLM to Skype and quickly dumped both of them. WLM provided a quick one-click access to my Hotmail e-mail account but no such feature exists in Skype. I rarely actually IM anyone so without the one-click access I have no use for an IM program. Now I just hit my e-mail from the web. It's slightly less convenient but at least it works.

Maybe they'll improve the integration before March but now that I've dropped it I doubt I'll go install it again.

March 15th 2013 will be the end of an era!!! ==> The King is dead, long live the King!

Who didn't grew up with MSN Messenger.

I just hope that Microsoft will better the user experience of the Skype and messages app. Nowadays I miss a lot of messages because I notice them too late. That wasn't the case with MSN Messenger.

Question: With in messenger you had the ability to use the sms service to text from PC to cell (mobile) phones, will that service be carried over into Skype. As Skype is right now, to use the sms service you have to buy credits...pay for the service.

I'm assuming it would continue to be like that with Skype where your paying for SMS service. I highly doubt they will make that a free option.

No I am not paying for skype credits to use the sms service.....that's why I like messenger. And now it's going bye bye. I could use google's or yahoo's versions but the task of getting everyone to switch becomes an issue. I hate being forced to pay for something that was free in the first place...

We all know of it, we all hardly use it in deference to itunes, VLC, and the sorts. But should it remain with us? I was thinking about this feature that is just sucky. I never use it other than to play media files, and I never use the navigation of it because it's just terrible. It also looks...
