Microsoft to kill the Messenger on March 15

  1. #11

I believe there are other very good alternatives to Messenger out there - many of them handle a variety of other IM clients like Yahoo, MSN, and more. I don't remember the names of them at the moment but if I get the information I will pass it on. Bottom line is that you don't have to have all your contacts switch to some other IM client: you can add contacts from a number of different IM clients and communicate with all of them from one client.

For some of you, you can probably remember the most popular form of messenger was "ICQ." Everybody who was anybody was on ICQ.

My wife remembers that I never did that but she says it is still around.

Who didn't grew up with MSN Messenger.

I just hope that Microsoft will better the user experience of the Skype and messages app. Nowadays I miss a lot of messages because I notice them too late. That wasn't the case with MSN Messenger.
    I didn't, was already grown up. . .
    I resemble that remark!

Even before that, anybody who was anybody had a CompuServe account. I had one of the original ones with the login of "[123, 456]". (I don't remember the actual numbers anymore).

I've had my hotmail account for a long time and always used to use MSN messenger, back in the days when it was popular and everyone I know used to use it. These days everyone just uses Facebook for conversations now, which I can't stand especially since Fb decided to now keep a record of every conversation in my message inbox (which I have to go and delete individually for each one) since then I only ever have 3-4 friends online with messenger.
I linked my Fb account to my hotmail just so I could chat and keep in touch with people.

I received an email saying that messenger was to be discontinued so I downloaded Skype to see what it was like. I previously didn't have a Skype account to set one up and saw that I could link my Facebook and hot mail accounts for all my contracts. Well I am not sure what I done but for some reason I ended up with 3 skype accounts! I blame their confusing setup process, which you think for a grown man with years of computer experience, building and installing my own PC's, creating websites etc I would have found easy...

After speaking to support I finally got my Skype account set up and linked correctly.
After downloading the desktop software and logging in I soon discovered that none of my contacts show up, either Facebook or hotmai. I can search for contacts but it just shows them as offline. There was a rare occurrence when it showed my contacts as being online but then it only lasted for 10 seconds and then went off again.

I also download the android app and same thing there....I have no contacts showing up.

So my overall opinion of Skype is that it's rubbish, and also they want me to pay extra for stuff I used to do for free.
