Microsoft Surface trampled at the bottom of the tablet pile this Christmas

While it does have drawbacks just like anything else, Microsoft’s (MSFT) Surface is a great slate for those looking for a fresh new take on the modern tablet. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like very many people were looking for a fresh new take on the modern tablet this holiday season.

Problem is that they didn't market it very well, neither did they Market Windows 8 well. Hence why probably poor sales. Add to the fact that many people just don't want to waste money on a expensive device, when say Windows 7 hasn't run it's course yet or that they don't want a very restrictive Surface RT device. Just waiting for the Pro to come out, maybe sales will take off that.

I think Microsoft have to at least try and get the Surface device to retail chains. Apple does it with these, don't restrict this to just Microsoft stores, and have proper trained people entice curiois people to the fold.

Hi there
This is a sort of "Misleading" statististic that can mean ANYTHING you want it to mean.

I never even SAW a TV commercial about Ms Surface Pro until a couple of days ago.

W8 forum users aren't the "General public". Most of my colleagues didn't even know Ms were in the tablet business at all -- all they knew about Ms was "Windows and Xbox -- while some also knew "Office".

Once the marketing boyos get their act together sales of these could take off - especially with all the heavy discounting going on now (at least here in N. Europe).

While myself I am not a tablet lover I can see some benefits of these and I'm sure they will take off.

I get the impression people are rather hoping this will fail -- why I don't know as from the specs if you like this type of device it seems good and currently far better than what "The Fruit Company" is offering at a similar price.

@ GhostDog -- Proper trained staff out in the field !!!! That's a good one --I don't know if you've been into some of the larger computer retail chains lately in these countries particularly : US, NL, BE, F, ES, GB -- My late Grandma's Cat probably has FORGOTTEN more about computers than some of these "Staff" would ever LEARN ion their entire lifetimes

Cheers

One big problem is that the fancy keyboard cover is super over priced and should have came with the device for free. Add to that the confusion over RT and other versions and it creates a disaster. I was looking forward to this tablet being competitive with other brands not just apple and it isn't happening.

Hi there
Give it time

I don't understand some of you guys "on the other side of the Pond". The whole philosophy business wise is much TOO SHORT TERM.

If a product isn't in the top 5 in Week one or the stock price hasn't increased by 200% within 50 seconds of the Market Opening Bell then you all perceive it as a colossal failure.

The Surface Pro isn't even available yet in a lot of areas yet.

Marketing new technogy in a severe recession isn't the best time --so give the product a chance -- let some of the early bugs get sorted out and throw it open to other retail outlets. That way we can also get some heavy discounting too

Remember these days companies are increasingly looking to offer cheap hardware and make money on content -- look at Amazon / Nook with the e-readers --really cheap now to get people to buy the e-books and most mobile phone providers subsidize considerably the handsets to get people to sign up to phone contracts.

This product WILL work.

The RT tablet I agree adds a bit to the confusion --it really should have been called something else as say Office Mini since the only conceivable reason to get this tablet is to use Ms office and it's cheaper than any other option - and of course you can't install "Classic Windows apps" on it either.

Cheers

Yes.

The product is poor on many levels.

Not surprising it isn't selling well.

If MS get to grips with product management and release something the customers want - then they will have a chance.

I haven't seen any signs of that change in attitude from MS - not yet anyway.

We will have to see if Miss Julie makes a better fist of it than her predecessor.

Peoples don't want a tablet they want a iPad because it's cool to have one. They gone have a iWatch in few months, look how peoples will now need a iWatch. For myself I don't need a tablet, I see no use to have one. I want a Microsoft Desktop and an Android phones , if not a iPhones, get it one for all Microsoft, focus on the desktop and do something better than 8, stop to drop your customers for products no one wants.

I bought a Surface RT and within 4 days had to get a replacement as it would not shut down at all. Everything was fine for another week and then the keyboard was no longer recognised and once again it would not shut down. I sent the whole kit and caboodle back, received my full refund and bought an Acer W510.

I can honestly say that the Surface was one of the best build tablets I have seen and will buy another Surface not RT though, but not for a year, until all the initial bugs have been ironed out.

Not surprising, not many know about it well enough to put that kind of money down on the tablet. It took a couple of years for the ipad to become a house name (after being skewered as a giant ipod touch that it is and being labeled a certain feminine hygiene product), the same will have to happen with the Surface. People will soon realize what a ripoff the ipad is over a Surface RT, and more so a Surface Pro.

Hey check this out...

I have a Rock, I painted some eyes on it and a mouth and put it in a box. It's my pet and you can have it if you want to buy it.
Your friend over there has one, and they said it's really cool. It's my pet rock, and you can own one too.

You could go buy a furby, but why would you do that? You have to train it, how blase and boring is that. Nah, this pet iRock will do just fine for you I think.

It's funny because it has an element of truth.

How do you think they got into that position?

Brilliant marketing - the product management is superb.

If MS really want to copy Apple - they could start by getting a grip on their product management.

The tablet market is mostly dominated by the iPad seeing that everyone is crazy about it, especially in US.
And it will be very difficult to convince iPad users/fans to switch over to the surface for sure, mostly impossible.

The rest are Desktop users who want better desktops and these (I'm one) will not go over to tablets just for fun.
The Desktop is replaceable only by another desktop. My smaller laptops can do what the tablet is supposed to. So the camping terrain is scarce for the tablets. I agree that it will take some time but the surface will gain more terrain, with time.

The low surface scores (in this short time) are expected scores. War is expensive.

I see it's 18$ on Amazon...
They all need some fresh air if you ask me for medical advice.

What updates??? It has a cable, this is a downgrade from what I find for free in my garden!

AND it does nothing!!!!!!

We all got a bunch of those but Wireless!!!
Even Fred Flintstone is a manufacturer then.

Tip:
Go in the garden/park, take some fresh air and get you rock.

Forgot the important part:
People (who forgot what a rock is) really pay 18$ for this!
Runs on all OSes: it was known even before the Stone Age.

It's funny how people that have never seriously used or own a Surface RT can judge how terrible it is or how it doesn't stack up to an iPad, or the apparent confusion with the RT name. I'm on a couple of Surface forums and there are plenty of Surface owners that have replaced their iPads and Androids, I haven't seen any threads on how confusing things are with RT. The problem is poor marketing, rather than running around clicking the keyboard and dancing around they should be showing what you can do with the Surface or Windows RT in general.
