New Leaked Windows 8 Screenshot Reveals Some Evolution, Albeit Minor

Yes, the Windows client is evolving (could it be any other way?), and a recently leaked Windows 8 screenshot seems to be offering a glimpse of one change introduced since Windows 7 was released.

As it’s heading toward Milestone 3, Windows 8 becomes available for testing to more and more early adopters.

Illustrative of this is the fact that leaked information and screenshots of Windows 7’s successor have started to increase in numbers, although one can hardly speak of a real volume of insights into the development of Windows vNext.

Leaked Windows 8 Screenshot reveals first Windows Update Changes.

Just a quick post here; and before we receive a wave of hate comments, please don’t forget Windows 8 Milestone 2 is still to be finalized. It is very likely that we will not see any aesthetic changes until Milestone 3, as we had seen in history with Windows 7.

That being said, it was the small changes in Windows 7 that mattered most, and we are starting to see the same kind of philosophy being incorporated into Windows 8 design.

The first notable change is the Restart if required box, which will hopefully reduce the likelihood of seeing the “Please restart for Windows Update to complete” warnings.

There are many threads now, similar to this, on web forums. But can anyone point me to a statement from Microsoft, or its senior and reliable personnel, where it is said that the next OS will be called Windows 8? ( No quotes or redirects please)
In fact, I feel the rumours (There I go) are quite the opposite. Any alleged info and reproduced screen shots etc, showing the OS as Windows 8, I would say are definitely suspect.

Hey davehc, we call it Windows 8 because we don't have any other codename to call it by yet.

Zen has it right. It is just a code name, as there have been for legacy OS's (Vista was not called Vista during the early milestone writing stages. I believe it was first revealed as "Vista" with the beta.)
As I said though, I am not out to start an argument - it is purely academic interest. I just feel that we are jumping the gun a little There are several forum owners, apart from this one, who have titled new forums with the "8" tag.

Unless there is an enormous change in way the that the OS operates and interacts with users, I don't see a reason not to call the next version of the OS "Windows 8". I know that there are other aspects regarding publicity and credibility of the OS, but I don't believe that it is a good strategy for Microsoft to change the outline of versions numbering now, once that Windows 7 is going so good!

Just my thoghts anyway :)

If the screenshot is genuine, then why are there updates available for an as-of-yet unreleased (and presumably unsupported) OS? Suspicious.

If I was the person figuring out what to name the next version of Windows, I think I'd stay with Win8 for the simple reason that Win7 was simply the best thing MS has put out in YEARS. After XP, ME and Vista, and the resulting chaos, I'd stick with "8" just to reinforce the notion that this can only be an improvement on the best thing since MS started making a GUI-based OS.
