Steve Ballmer's Nightmare Is Coming True

Its what I have thought for awhile, You have more than a few who Hate the new WIndows 8 interface on a PC, WIndows Phone is not cool and like who cares?

What Microsoft should do:
Concentrate on OS developement offer new versions of 8 for a PC less touch more 7 like
Dump phone
Allow and develop 8 to use Android apps

the New MS under my plan would be
OS
Office
Server
Xbox

Dumping
Windows only Apps for 8 allowing Android so the market would be huge
Phone, it will never be anything like Iphone or Android
idea to be successful you must have it all.......Apple has learned this in the past and if they do not remember they will too fall eventually

What a fluff anti MS piece:

1. The iPad eats the consumer PC market.
iPad eats PC market (Apples sell better than oranges so Florida is in trouble?!)

2. Employees gradually switch away from using Windows PCs for work.
The author even says in the first sentence that this has not played out yet...

3. Windows 8 fails to stop the iPad.
"it's still early, but" the auther has no fact to back this up either. the iPad has been out since 2010, the surface for what a month now. let's see the numbers in relative comparison

4. Loyal developers start to leave the Microsoft platform
"We're not sure if this happening or not. So far, the early signs are actually positive for Microsoft" again the author just grabbing at straws

5. Windows Phone gets no traction despite the Nokia deal and RIM's collapse.
I just upgraded my phone to the Nokia 920 and they are on back order, the AT&T store can't keep them in stock, plus catching up to even Android Apple is having a hard time with....

6. Office loses relevance.
How does Office lose revelance?! I have even went so far as to suggest to my company to switch to Open Office or Libre. They had NO interest and they are FREE. Again "The death of Office, has not happened, though. Despite Google's attempt to create Docs, companies aren't giving up on Excel." The author can't even agree with his own statement..

7. Microsoft's other business applications start to erode.
The author agian speculating "If" before saying "Exchange, SharePoint, and Dynamics all bring in more than $1 billion per year"

8. The platform business collapses
Speculation again

9. The Xbox was never going to make up the slack, and Microsoft can no longer afford to keep investing in it.
Again assuming all the above actually happens, which acording to the author has not..

10. Microsoft suffers a huge quarterly loss. Ballmer retires to play golf.
This is crap too, they had a write off on a loss for one qurter, the author even says so.

Just more junk reporting in my opinion....

A shift in computing trends IS happening, in fact, it's already happened and though the idea of the PC disappearing entirely is ridiculous, the notion that Microsoft has nothing to worry about is equally absurd. They're deadly worried because they've been left behind in this new era and they know it. You only need to look at Windows 8 to know that.

Hi there
Please SAVE THE PLANET by not reading the article -- eventually they won't waste paper on this any more -- less trees being cut down to produce rubbish mags.

"The Fruit Company" suffered its worse stock display in 4 YEARS --even though the rest of

the market was ok
Dow, S&P rise, but Nasdaq sours with Apple in wild day - Yahoo! Finance

Meanwhile MSFT

MSFT: Summary for Microsoft Corporation- Yahoo! Finance

I don't think MS is in any trouble -- "The Fruit Company" clearly is -- as the Ipad and Iphone market has matured and there's not much else on the scene. Even the once might Ipod is for most a redundant piece of kit as decent music players are incorporated into newer phones - and as these can take up to 32 GB extra storage on micro SD cards you can store plenty of music on these (even in FLAC) - which the SAMSUNG music player now plays !!).

Ms make a LOT of money from its office products. server software. SQL server and "consultancy" / service fees - and I don't know any large business who has a contract with Apple.

Cheers

They're deadly worried because they've been left behind in this new era and they know it. You only need to look at Windows 8 to know that.

There is simply a change in the ratio of devices being used, that's all. The PC isn't "going away", there are simply now devices existing that do jobs that people might have tried to force a PC to do. The sale of a PC is lost only when someone buys a device that a PC wasn't well suited for in the first place.

Maybe MS is worried. Maybe MS has made a mistake with Win8 and their tablet/mobile computing initiative is going to fail. Time will tell. However it turns out, though, the PC ain't going away and neither is Microsoft. They may hit a brick wall with this and have to adjust but they're not going away.

In my particular ecosystem (you could say my house) the PC's are the main workstations - at the center of our data needs. The mobile devices (iPhones and iPads) are on the outside of the circle. I would never get rid of the PC's, they're the basis for my whole structure.

The only scenario I could see having only mobile devices might be if I've decided that the "cloud" is my "base". I dunno about anyone else but I'd rather not let the cloud be the center of my data infrastructure. If my connection to the outside world goes Tango-Uniform then I'm in trouble. I'll keep my "center" at my desk at the house thanks. And that means a PC (or PC's).

windows 8 has barely seen the light of day...

windows 8 tablets are far more versatile than most other tablets, the pro versions to come take that even further supporting full x86/x64 applications.

it's not a surprise to see less pc sales, people are skint since the global market collapse...oddly enough, and there is a market saturation of different devices that do what they need.

cloud computing is a nice idea, years and years away from being a viable concept at an industrial and commercial level though, the infrastructure to support it just isn't there outside of Malta/south Korea so this big boom we all hear about is a pipe dream unless governments around the world find a spare couple of hundred billion to completely revamp there Telecoms infrastructure.

to look at the market you have to look at every company, from intel/amd to manufacturers like gigabyte and asus as well as corsair and ocz, you can't look at the pc industry and exclude cisco, and then base all of your findings on new pc sales when the market for custom built pc's is probably fair old size as well and seems to manage to support many a company as it is.

if you own an o/s then you don't need a new pc, just buy new parts and reinstall these market analysts are taking all of that into account yes? somehow i doubt it.

that's just it, you all have pretty much said it. Me personally, I haven't bought a new PC in close to 6 years. I simply upgrade it. when I get to a point that this rig won't do what I need, then I will buy new. Many people are in a similar situation, why buy a new PC when what they have works just fine, even if it's XP.

I have two Android tablets and I use them in bed, or on trips, but they will never replace my PC. That is where work gets done...

:ditto:I have two PCs ... flagship and backup. And likewise that's where it all happens for me.

Also have a Sony Ericsson Android mobile touch phone. And that fills all my needs when I'm away from base. Or likewise run it off my WiFi modem/router if I want to sit in bed and surf the net, check my bank balance ... not recommended before falling asleep ... leads to nightmares ... or send an email, etc, etc.

I don't even have an iNet plan for the mobile. So many places have free iNet cafe it's not needed. In Perth, the capital of West Aussie, the mayor is talking of making free iNet for the whole CBD, (central business district). Then there's HJs, Big Mac, most decent coffee shops, and the list goes on.

Add to that Bluetooth if you're out and about with friends and want a free transfer of a photo, text doco, or whatever.

What a crapy article. Must have been written by a Apple minded journalist. And then the claims that the iPad is going to kill the consumer PC market. A PC lasts for at least 4 years without performance issues. The iPad lasts for less then 2 years (and then the support is killed) and costs the same!!!

Wait untill the financial crisis hits real hard ==> like the 3rd EU war/ dividing of Europe (North vs South offcourse and the North will win :geek:). Then the people won't have the cash to buy a new iPad every year and the good old PC .... ==> will run for another year without trouble!

ps. Yes, I'm not ashamed to say it ==> I'm a Microsoft Fan Boy!
