There is simply a change in the ratio of devices being used, that's all. The PC isn't "going away", there are simply now devices existing that do jobs that people might have tried to force a PC to do. The sale of a PC is lost only when someone buys a device that a PC wasn't well suited for in the first place.

Maybe MS is worried. Maybe MS has made a mistake with Win8 and their tablet/mobile computing initiative is going to fail. Time will tell. However it turns out, though, the PC ain't going away and neither is Microsoft. They may hit a brick wall with this and have to adjust but they're not going away.

In my particular ecosystem (you could say my house) the PC's are the main workstations - at the center of our data needs. The mobile devices (iPhones and iPads) are on the outside of the circle. I would never get rid of the PC's, they're the basis for my whole structure.

The only scenario I could see having only mobile devices might be if I've decided that the "cloud" is my "base". I dunno about anyone else but I'd rather not let the cloud be the center of my data infrastructure. If my connection to the outside world goes Tango-Uniform then I'm in trouble. I'll keep my "center" at my desk at the house thanks. And that means a PC (or PC's).

windows 8 has barely seen the light of day...

windows 8 tablets are far more versatile than most other tablets, the pro versions to come take that even further supporting full x86/x64 applications.

it's not a surprise to see less pc sales, people are skint since the global market collapse...oddly enough, and there is a market saturation of different devices that do what they need.

cloud computing is a nice idea, years and years away from being a viable concept at an industrial and commercial level though, the infrastructure to support it just isn't there outside of Malta/south Korea so this big boom we all hear about is a pipe dream unless governments around the world find a spare couple of hundred billion to completely revamp there Telecoms infrastructure.

to look at the market you have to look at every company, from intel/amd to manufacturers like gigabyte and asus as well as corsair and ocz, you can't look at the pc industry and exclude cisco, and then base all of your findings on new pc sales when the market for custom built pc's is probably fair old size as well and seems to manage to support many a company as it is.

if you own an o/s then you don't need a new pc, just buy new parts and reinstall these market analysts are taking all of that into account yes? somehow i doubt it.

that's just it, you all have pretty much said it. Me personally, I haven't bought a new PC in close to 6 years. I simply upgrade it. when I get to a point that this rig won't do what I need, then I will buy new. Many people are in a similar situation, why buy a new PC when what they have works just fine, even if it's XP.

I have two Android tablets and I use them in bed, or on trips, but they will never replace my PC. That is where work gets done...

I have two PCs ... flagship and backup. And likewise that's where it all happens for me.

Also have a Sony Ericsson Android mobile touch phone. And that fills all my needs when I'm away from base. Or likewise run it off my WiFi modem/router if I want to sit in bed and surf the net, check my bank balance ... not recommended before falling asleep ... leads to nightmares ... or send an email, etc, etc.

I don't even have an iNet plan for the mobile. So many places have free iNet cafe it's not needed. In Perth, the capital of West Aussie, the mayor is talking of making free iNet for the whole CBD, (central business district). Then there's HJs, Big Mac, most decent coffee shops, and the list goes on.

Add to that Bluetooth if you're out and about with friends and want a free transfer of a photo, text doco, or whatever.

What a crapy article. Must have been written by a Apple minded journalist. And then the claims that the iPad is going to kill the consumer PC market. A PC lasts for at least 4 years without performance issues. The iPad lasts for less then 2 years (and then the support is killed) and costs the same!!!

Wait untill the financial crisis hits real hard ==> like the 3rd EU war/ dividing of Europe (North vs South offcourse and the North will win ). Then the people won't have the cash to buy a new iPad every year and the good old PC .... ==> will run for another year without trouble!

ps. Yes, I'm not ashamed to say it ==> I'm a Microsoft Fan Boy!
