CES: Microsoft shows off Windows 8 on ARM | ZDNetMicrosoft demonstrated at a press conference on January 5 the “next version of Windows” running on ARM processors, as many Microsoft watchers had been expecting.
At the press conference — held a few hours before CEO Steve Ballmer will keynote the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) — Microsoft Windows President Steven Sinofsky showed off an early build of Windows 8 runnong on new systems-on-a-chip (SoC) platforms from NVIDIA, Qualcomm and Texas Instruments on ARM. To prove Microsoft isn’t abandonning the x86 architecture with Windows 8, company officials also showed off Windows 8 running on x86 SOC.
Rumors that Microsoft would show off Windows 8 running on ARM have been circulating for the past couple of weeks. Earlier this week, TechFlash reported that Microsoft had cut deals with the aforementioned ARM chip makers, which will enable Windows 8 to run on ARM-based systems once the next release of Microsoft’s operating system is available.

Actually it was Windows 8. It was updated software (build 7667 i think) to run with the ARM processors. Steve Ballmer said that it was the next version of Windows that we were seeing in action, it's just that the User Interface was the same one from Windows 7. The reason they did this was just to show off the advancement of the processing, not a new UI.
So while it may look no different, it is in fact different. Under the hood it is Windows 8, on the surface it is Windows 7. I hope I didn't make it more confusing

Ah okay. so they are still keeping the GUI under wraps. Sounds like Microsoft. but on the other side of things with it moving to SoC what does that mean for current generation pc's? Will new hardware be required of Win 8 or is it going to be a dual version?

Microsoft wouldn't force its entire user base to upgrade their hardware for an OS. Windows 8 should run fine on anything that runs windows 7 (IMO, without official specs released). This was just to show that Windows 8 will support ARM processors

Ahh, It had me and my room mates concerned. We didn't think that they would actually force that, even though it would be interesting to see an ARM hybrid system(Arm for the OS and a standard processor+ram for the apps)

Yeah, I can't see MS deserting AMD/Intel (both of which are not focussed on ARM chips) completely. This is more to allow Windows 8 to run on netbooks, which some say are going to be mostly ARM powered in the future.

The ARM support is probably the most significant announcement they made. Now Windows can take over the world. Wait until you have it in your car with a keyboard on the steering wheel.

Amazing what Windows Eight can do ...
You are probably right (except for the warp speed). Some Android devices already do very well with voice commands.
