Microsoft Surface Pro is NOT overpriced

No sooner had Microsoft revealed the cost of self-branded tablets running Windows RT than doomsayers started crying pricing foul. The 64GB model will sell for $899, starting next month, and the 128 gigger for $999. I've seen several blog posts gleefully whack Surface Pro pricing as being way too high. They're wrong, in part by the Apple device comparison they make.

I asked Stephen Baker, NPD's vice president of industry analysis, about Surface Pro pricing, whether it's just right, too high or too low. "Interesting question though because most of what I have seen has compared it to the high-end iPad". But Microsoft has higher competitive ambitions: MacBook Air, and even Windows ultrabooks. That's the comparison I make and told Baker so. There, the tablet sits just fine. The company priced Surface RT against iPad. Surface Pro squares against Apple's thin-and-light laptop with 11.6-inch display.

Have to agree, the comparisons being made are not equal.

You can buy a low powered CPU laptop for +$400, or a powerful CPU laptop for +$1,000.
If you compare the two, one is better/powerful, the other is cheaper.

The Surface Pro is not in the same category as iPad, so the price difference is to be expected.
If you're in the market for a low powered tablet for basic usage scenario, both Surface tablets should not be on your list.

But I can still buy a very capable tablet that, other than the screen resolution, offers more than the Surface Pro and for less money. If the Surface Pro came with a keyboard, then I think the value proposition would improve. And I've never even thought of comparing it to anything made by Apple.

I guess time will tell. But, in a telling move, ms has halved it's order for the surface from it's Asian manufacturers....

Yes it would seem a better deal to have Office included with Pro and or a Keyboard. Then the price wouldn't seem so high for most

I totally agree. I do not see people spending that much money for a Surface Windows Pro, I think it is totally over priced

Probably since the Surface is a tablet, people expect tablet prices of it being at the most of 700 dollars, mainly because of the ipad.

But what really needs to be pushed is that it's a tablet PC, which runs iTunes 11 that is used to manage the ipad mini and other idevice releases. BIG difference there! Or, it's basically a perfect touch enabled ultrabook, with the touch or type cover included. A base 64 gig model with the cover makes it a good 1,000 dollars, which is real equivalent to a Lenovo Yoga.
