Microsoft Said to Speed Windows upgrades to rival Google

Microsoft Corp. plans to overhaul how it develops the flagship Windows operating system in a strategic shift aimed at keeping pace with nimbler rivals Apple Inc. and Google Inc., people familiar with the matter said. Microsoft aims to upgrade the software more frequently, about once a year, rather than every two or three years as it’s done in the past, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the product plans are private. The company plans to unveil the first of these updates in 2013, one of the people said.

I really doubt it will be like yearly Windows 9, Windows 10, ect, type updates. Spending millions upon millions of dollars for Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 just to have Windows 9 around the corner, not smart.

My bet is that the Windows Blue update will be like a Windows 8.5 style update, or 8.1. It doesn't sound like a Service Pack in the traditional sense, more like 98 Second Edition. I base this off of Windows Phone 7. When it came out, it wasn't a totally feature complete platform, but great and usable. A year or so later, the Mango update notched it up to Windows Phone 7.5; although still referred to as Windows Phone 7. A year or so later, Windows Phone 8 is released where 7.5 is being notched up to 7.8.

Microsoft most likely will be wanting to keep Windows and Windows Phone on similar development cycles to keep both the tablet PCs and phones up to date with each other and the two year phone contracts are their limit to that.

LOL! Free updates are a thing I'd enjoy. Those pirates might consider ACTUALLY paying if the upgrades are $5 a piece.
