Microsoft Surface Pro get half battery life of Surface RT

How much does battery life matter to tablet users? Microsoft may soon find out, first hand.

Microsoft went public today with pricing for its Surface Pro PC/tablet devices -- the Intel-based ones running Windows 8 Pro that will allow users to run their existing third-party apps on the desktop. The 64GB version will be $899; the 128GB version, $999. (Both prices include a pen, but no touch or type keyboard/cover. So add another $120 to $130 for that.)

Pricing is not all the team shared about the Microsoft-branded Surface Pros, due out in January 2013.

Surface Pros are going to get about half the battery life of the Surface RTs. Surface RTs get between eight and ten hours of battery life, based on various estimates I've seen (and my own personal experience on mine).

It make sense given that the Pro version is primarily a laptop without a keyboard.

I hope the Surface Pro with the Haswell CPU can last at least 6 hours. Battery life on the Ivy Bridge Surface Pro is disappointing, considering that the device is marketed as a powerhouse "tablet."

Then the marketing is truthful; it's a powerhouse, not a power saver.

I'm getting at least that from my i7 Sandy Bridge 'Super-Lappy'.

Must admit, I was very pleasantly surprised, although Acer did claim good battery-life.

Four to five hour battery life with a 1080p screen resolution, 10 point multi-touch screen with palm block, along with an i5 processor. I have to say it's not too shabby seeing as the RT only has the minimum 1366x768, five point multi-touch and no palm block with an ARM processor; and gets eight to 10 hours on battery.

One needs to also note that the battery in a x86 tablet is usually of a lower capacity than that in an Arm tablet, due to available space.

    Hi there
at 999 USD -- that's EXCLUDING TAX so we are talking around 1300 USD if you get the keyboard as well -- you'll need the 128 GB version if you want to run anything like Office / Photoshop etc on your tablet -- I can't see the value now of this tablet over an Ultrabook apart from the form factor being slightly smaller.

In Europe this is going to cost around 1100 EUR (inc tax) --- Sorry MS am passing on this one unless I can source it a LOT CHEAPER.

    Cheers
