Microsoft Surface Pro get half battery life of Surface RT

How much does battery life matter to tablet users? Microsoft may soon find out, first hand.

Microsoft went public today with pricing for its Surface Pro PC/tablet devices -- the Intel-based ones running Windows 8 Pro that will allow users to run their existing third-party apps on the desktop. The 64GB version will be $899; the 128GB version, $999. (Both prices include a pen, but no touch or type keyboard/cover. So add another $120 to $130 for that.)

Pricing is not all the team shared about the Microsoft-branded Surface Pros, due out in January 2013.

Surface Pros are going to get about half the battery life of the Surface RTs. Surface RTs get between eight and ten hours of battery life, based on various estimates I've seen (and my own personal experience on mine).

I hope the Surface Pro with the Haswell CPU can last at least 6 hours. Battery life on the Ivy Bridge Surface Pro is disappointing, considering that the device is marketed as a powerhouse "tablet."

Then the marketing is truthful; it's a powerhouse, not a power saver. :)

I'm getting at least that from my i7 Sandy Bridge 'Super-Lappy'.

Must admit, I was very pleasantly surprised, although Acer did claim good battery-life.

    Borderline pathetic.
Four to five hour battery life with a 1080p screen resolution, 10 point multi-touch screen with palm block, along with an i5 processor. I have to say it's not too shabby seeing as the RT only has the minimum 1366x768, five point multi-touch and no palm block with an ARM processor; and gets eight to 10 hours on battery.

One needs to also note that the battery in a x86 tablet is usually of a lower capacity than that in an Arm tablet, due to available space.

Hi there
at 999 USD -- that's EXCLUDING TAX so we are talking around 1300 USD if you get the keyboard as well -- you'll need the 128 GB version if you want to run anything like Office / Photoshop etc on your tablet -- I can't see the value now of this tablet over an Ultrabook apart from the form factor being slightly smaller.

In Europe this is going to cost around 1100 EUR (inc tax) --- Sorry MS am passing on this one unless I can source it a LOT CHEAPER.

Cheers
jimbo

Your math skills are highly questionable. First, sales tax in the US is only about 8% maximum (it varies by state, and there is no federal income tax), and second wise shoppers use sites that do not charge tax because they are in a different state. So tax is not an issue for anyone buying a surface online.

The keyboard is $129, so that's $1128, plus shipping (and many places have free shipping as well, especially in the holiday season).

OK stand corrected on this one -- but even so in my book 1200 USD is still a LOT of money when I can get say a semi decent (not even an Ultrabook) HP laptop for around 450 - 550 USD.

OK form factor is bigger etc but it seems to me that this tablet at around 1200 USD isn't a sensible buy for anyone other than the really rich guys.

Everybody has different takes on new technology --- I remember being one of the first adopters of CD's years ago at HUMUNGOUS prices -- but I'm older and wiser now -- and suggest people leave the ist iteration when a MK II or something similar will appear not too much later -- probably better 'Specced and certainly significantly cheaper.

Early adopters usually pay through the nose to be the first off the blocks.

jimbo I think you are right. This thing is too expensive - any way you look at it. If you want a tablet, you can get a Nexus 7 for $199 and have a ball with it - as I just do.

And I'll take the extra $1000 and make a cruise to the islands.

Have you looked at Ultrabooks that weight 1 pound, have 128GB SSD's are capacitive touch and also have Wacom tablets built-in? I doubt you will find anything even close to that price, particularly in an i5.

If the actual batter life of the Surface Pro is only 4 hours, I may stick with the Acer W700. I get almost 6 hours with it.

My laptop is similar to that of the banned poster 'Kat' (see above, post #6). He/she claimed 6+ hours of battery, and I can confirm his/her figures. But I'd want and expect much better figures from a tablet/tablet PC though, Surface Pro or not.

Overpriced, pure and simple. Very few people will be buying this, regardless of the battery life. It's astonishing to see how M$ keep shooting themself in the foot.

That's not something I can afford, I wouldn't buy it even if I could. For that kind of cash I'd be looking at a hybrid with a detachable keyboard. Something that folds up like a laptop. A real keyboard not a Rubbermaid keyboard. Even then I'd be tempted to just buy an Ultrabook.
