Surface Pro Pricing

Today, I want to share a bit more detail about the growing Surface family of products and Surface with Windows 8 Pro, specifically around pricing. In January, Surface with Windows 8 Pro will be available in two versions and pricing will start at $899:

· 64GB standalone version at $899
· 128GB stand0alone version at $999

A tablet whose biggest benefit is a keyboard isn't worth that kind of loot to me. I will continue to use my existing laptops, desktops and android tablet (which cost a fraction of the above). They provide me with the functionality without 800 plus more dollars.

Hi there
No way Jose would I pay nearly 1000 USD for a tablet -- remember in the US these prices are shown NOT INCLUDING tax whereas in Europe the price is shown TAX included.

You can get a better 'Specd Laptop for about 1/3 to 1/2 the price so why waste your money.

I like the idea of a decent flexible tablet -- but at these prices -- I'm running back to the laptop crowd.

Cheers

Hi there dave
remember in the US you have to add both FEDERAL and STATE tax to these prices -- so unless you live on a Horse Farm in Texas you are adding around 20% to the US advertised price so the US difference in price vs the European price isn't so significant as it used to be.

EUROPEAN prices are always shown INCLUSIVE of all taxes unless specifically stated EXC VAT -- but even then the VAT inclusive price is always shown as well..

I think MS will really have to have a re-think on this one -- great product, great specs (Surface pro) but WAY WAY too expensive.

Cheers

I had been holding out for a Pro, but I am having a real debate about it now. The pricing does seem a bit steep for what you are getting. I like the idea of a Windows tablet though. And since I don't have a laptop I wouldn't mind having a laptop equivalent that is also a powerful tablet.

I guess I still need to see more especially battery life on this thing.

Last I checked, we still have no federal sales tax in the US. The highest combined state and local sales tax I've ever paid was something over 8%. Substantial, but not close to 20%.

Maybe the European style VAT will be coming to the US someday, but maybe not soon. It hasn't figured prominently in recent deficit reduction talks.

SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) - Microsoft announced Thursday that its Surface Pro, a version of its new tablet aimed at business users, would be available in January starting at $899 for US customers.
The Surface Pro will be powered by an Intel processor and have a full version of the new Windows 8 operating system, which is designed with both PCs and tablets in mind.
"It's a full PC AND a tablet," said a blog post from Microsoft's Panos Panay.

I have been to their Kiosk in our large Mall, people are looking and then walking off and down to the Apple store. It's what I did and I bought an Apple iPad4. Hey anyone can pickup a WiFi keyboard and a iPad and be money ahead. Microsoft has again shown they do not understand what the public wants and will be willing to pay. With the Surface aimed at doing work as if it was a laptop, the OS RT they stuck on it just won't cut it. Have you looked at their new Windows8? I put it on one computer and I find nothing good to say about it. I have seen many people returning their new computers to Best Buy, and asking to have windows8 removed and Windows7 installed.

The specs are not that much better than my laptop (see system specs) which is last years model has more ram, only cost $400 (CAN) + another $100 with 128GB SSD upgrade.

The only advantages are the touch capabilities and higher screen resolution. Also having to add another $129-$139 (CAN) for a touch cover/type cover is a bit extreme and with a new OS supposedly due out every year this may be obsolete by the next OS.

I'm along the same lines. In fact I'm disappointed at the price. I thought they would at least have an introductory offer. Also disappointing is that it doesn't come with Office, for I'm in need to upgrade mine. If they would've included that, it might have been worth it for me. I'm still running 2000 on 7 side, which suffices me. but I need to upgrade to run on 8.

Well, at those prices I don't see how they're going to sell very many if it's up there with the prices of ultrabooks, laptops, and the like as others have posted. On the other hand, iPads sell like hotcakes for the crap they are. This will be interesting to watch. As for the time being, I'll be starting a comparison list to see what I'll be purchasing. Hopefully an after-the-holiday sale.

I have both the Galaxy Tab2 and the Galaxy 10.1 note. the larger 10.1 note Galaxy is much better IMHO to use then the smaller Tab2. I use them and my iPad2&iPad4. Also my Apple Mac book Pro and a bunch of Windows computers. the new Microsoft Surface is doomed to failure. It won't be around long unless Microsoft just dumps a lot of share holders money into a losing system. Like Apple or not it is a world class group of machines.

That may be, but I won't buy closed-architecture or walled-garden machines or software under any circumstances.

To me, that defeats the whole purpose and enjoyment I get from IBM/Windows machines

You got an open source TV? Fridge? Car? Buy an iPad and it works out the box no farting about with drivers etc. it just works. If you don't want it to be closed system you jailbreak and customise just like a car. But like for most people you just drive it and enjoy it.
