Ms's Fatal error -- Not necessary to have multiple devices

Hi there
read this

Microsoft 'fundamentally against' carrying both tablet and laptop | News | TechRadar

I would fundamentally disagree with the premise of the article.

You DO need different devices depending on what you are doing.

I'm not going to make a phone call from a public spot using a laptop --that's what I've got a PHONE for even if the computer could do it.

A hybrid device could work but then it could suffer the drawbacks of doing things OK but nothing best for the device.

Tablet needs to be light and simple, laptop needs mouse, keyboard and decent processing power.

Phone needs to be ---well a PHONE !!.

Well, speaking for myself, while I may buy a cheapish 7" tablet for
convenience when travelling, neither my laptops nor my desktop are
going anywhere in the foreseeable future.

And when they do, it'll be my choice, not Microsoft's or anyone else's.

And I really couldn't care less about this pointless obsession with
one all-encompassing OS.

Not gonna happen in this household.

That is what Microsoft believes in jimbo, a phone and a tablet PC should be all that you would need.

For me though, that's a desktop PC and a Windows Phone for now, until the Surface Pro comes out. :)

It seems they believe we are all complete idiots.

We will see how many swallow the marketing guff and do what a big corporation wants them to do.

We already have people on the net posting absurd comments like "you must change".

They don't seem to understand a corporation wants people to do something which benefits that corporation.

In what sense "must" people go along with what a corporation wants?

Complete tosh.

Hi Jimbo, made me genuinely laff. :D

Isn't that what Hitler said of the French Resistance in WWII?

I don't go for the all in one approach either. While I "could" read a book on my tablet, it's not going to happen. I'm going to use my Kindle because it goes weeks and weeks and weeks on a charge. Best device for the job, not all in one device that only does it somewhat well.

LeBlonde didn't say that multiple devices aren't necessary, or that they are trying to rid the world of them. All he said was that they question the need to carry around both a tablet and a laptop at the same time. There was nothing about mobile phones, desktops or anything else being considered unnecessary.

I tend to agree with him. I have a Windows tablet, that is almost a mirror image of my desktop, with a cover that has an integrated keyboard and I use this just like a laptop, but I also use the tablet on its own for other uses. It's versatile, functional and effective. I also have a notebook that no longer sees the light of day.
