Microsoft Surface makes a good first impression

I am pleasantly surprised by my initial reaction, which quite simply is "wow". This starkly contrasts with my negative response to iPad mini. (But the Apple Store jaunt to see the tablet can wait a few paragraphs.) Surface's display is bright, clean, clear and crisp. Font rendering is superb, particularly given resolution is only 1366 by 768. The tablet is fast and touch-response exact and fluid. Presentation of default apps, such as MSN and weather, pop. They look exceptionally good, and Microsoft serves up lots of rich touchy, feely additional content throughout. Presentation gets A-plus.

Honestly, I'm looking at it, and want it, but something tell me that I don't really need it. Tablets still a gadget for my "own" usage . it's gone be an impulsive move of the moment if I get one.

I would consider one if I could get it at a good price but with full-featured laptops and even netbooks (with Win7) available at comparable or better prices I'll wait.

+1 to what you both said. I'd really like to have a tablet but its not a must have item for me. I don't want an RT device, I want a fully capable Windows 8 Pro device. But for the price of one of those I can get a full featured laptop with a much bigger screen. :confused:

Agreed. It would be nice to have the pro version, but for the price, I just can't justify it. I already have two android tablets and I use the crap out of them, but I could get a nicer desktop or a laptop for theprice point they set these at.

Exactly, and if you move into the hybrids with the keyboard dock that makes it netbook like, it can get really pricy. :shock:

The other problem I see coming is where are people supposed to try these out? We just got a MS Store at our closest mall. That doesn't mean there is one close to everyone. I know personally I won't buy anything, especially tech with out playing with it first. Most consumers who go looking will go to Bestbuy or Fry's, but they won't see the Surface there. Instead they will be able to play with other tablets including the iPad and most will be at a lower price point.

I've read a few stories already of people accidently leaving it on their cars and driving off, with it flying off the roof! Still works and only has scratches.

I am in the market for a tablet PC, as I was looking into laptops and ultrabooks a year ago, but nothing really got me going. Except for Vizio's ultrabook, THAT is a nice ultrabook! But I may not buy a Surface Pro until much later, but I'm iffy. I do think it will start at $800, for the base 64 gig model. I don't need huge storage or something overpowered, just mostly for the stylus and running AutoCAD and maybe some light Photoshopping.
