Windows RT lands with too many restrictions

Although Windows RT does showcase many of the best things about Windows 8, it also has limitations that its more full-featured sibling doesn't. Take a First Look at Microsoft's tablet version of the new Windows.

    Microsoft Windows RT review:

Limited and confusing, Microsoft's tablet OS hamstrings its best features

The good: Windows RT takes Microsoft's operating system to places it's never been before. Running on lower-powered ARM chips and forgoing third-party legacy Windows programs, Windows RT emphasizes much of the best of Windows 8.

The bad: You won't be able to run anything from Windows 7 on Windows RT, and Windows RT tablets have been dogged by performance complaints.

The bottom line: Windows RT is a strange beast. On the one hand, speed, security, and the best of Windows 8 make RT a pleasure to use. But app restrictions make Windows RT confusing, and the limited availability of apps undercuts the operating system's usefulness.

I don't find it confusing so much now. It's just Windows 8 coded for ARM processors, with ends up meaning Desktop software doesn't work with it*. It offers impervious protection against malware as there are no malware for it, yet. It has Office 2013 Home and Student. Basically, it's a niche product for people who want a portable PC with decent battery life, but just really need Office. They may already have a PC, but need a new one. Or, some want to replace their laptop with a Windows RT device, again namely for Office and apps.

*Apparently some Russian developer has an x86 emulator for Windows RT that can get 85% of legacy app code to run on it.

I don't know, RT strikes me as a niche product, nothing too mainstream. Maybe 5-8 years from now, RT might become much more mainstream but it's iffy.
