Microsoft patent spies on consumers to enforce DRM

A new patent application filed by Microsoft and granted by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office details a content distribution system which uses cameras to detect whether or not you've been paying for your content.
Credit: CNET

The patent, US20120278904, works as a surveillance mechanism, inbuilt within devices including television sets, computers, smartphones and tablets in order to enforce digital rights management (DRM). In other words, if you're streaming content without a license, it can be detected -- and your media stream cut off.

    Borderline pathetic.
Cokie will think it is just wonderful.

Disgusting is more apt.

But not altogether surprising.

Perhaps now the pennies will start to drop about the where all this control we see in win8 is leading.

If people don't cotton on and make their opposition heard - then I shudder to think what it will be like in a few years.

It isn't just MS, of course. But this is a win8 forum - so it is their actions we discuss.

Oh no, not this crap. This I will not tolerate.
If I have to, i will

1.) cover every single camera eye with black tape, and if that doesn't work.
Stop consuming that content and stop buying it, period. No money from the masses and they go bankrupt and they themselves will revolt against the idea. If they can't sell the content, then it won't matter what they try to tack on.

2.) if this becomes overly overt and deeply embedded, it will be time to switch off completely and use something else completely offline.
Then see #1 again.

This is an invasion of privacy, however, if you agree to the EULA and watch or use whatever is attached to that EULA, you have nothing to complain about.

The world is changing, and 1984 is upon us. Soylent Green is approaching reality.

However, on a side note, this will go over as well as other DRM implemtations have in recent years. not very well.
The general public will not pay, nor stand for such things as this.

Technically the government is already spying on you through all your electronic devices but this is just horrible. Even more people invading our privacy? I guess the only way to be private is sitting in a room doing something non-electronic related.

It is not just an isolated idea.

It is part of the whole thrust of controlling the users, controlling the content ( or getting paid by others to control their content - amounts to the same thing ).

You must all be aware that is going on - and progressing right in front of your eyes.

It's annoying, that is for sure.

I bought a couple of movies for the kids, but don't want them handling the media. I ripped the movies onto my HDD, then I ran handbrake and encoded them to MP4 files and put it on my PS3 media server. Started watching the movie and all was well for 20 minutes. Then Cinavia kicked in and the sound went away. Decided instead to just play back from my 360, but found out that while it doesn't kick out sound for Cinavia, but it cannot fast forward or rewind the streaming MP4 file.

So darn annoying.

Hi there
rip with AnyDVD to a virtual ISO -- works every time and no Cinavia B/S.

From the Virtual Iso you can convert to other formats such as MP4 --- no CSS or regional coding --works perfectly.

Cheers

Thanks Jimbo. I was hoping to not have to purchase AnyDVD in order to rip my movies. I think I read that the newest version of DVDFab now remove Cinavia...I just happened to not be using the latest version. I use DVD Fab as it's free.
