Microsoft's Midori OS skunkworks project soldiers on

A new research paper makes a not-so-thinly-veiled reference to Microsoft's secret project to develop a non-Windows-based operating system and programming environment.

Midori -- the Microsoft skunkworks operating-system project -- is still alive and moving forward.

Midori is a new operating system being developed by a team of all-star Microsoft programmers. Midori is not based on the current NT kernel; instead, its original roots can be traced back to Singularity, a Microsoft-Research-developed microkernel operating system. Headed (at least at one point) by Senior Vice President of Technical Strategy Eric Rudder, Midori is believed to be a distributed, concurrent operating system. The product and associated deliverables (a related programming language/framework, etc.) are in technical incubation.

I'm surprised it's still at the incubation stage. This looks like a new kernel or a new OS base of Windows 10 or on.

Midori is not that new, if my memory is good they start to work at it a little bit after they release XP. I can't think at Midori without think at ReactOS


Coke I don't want to make you cry , but rumors are that Windows 8 will be the last OS call Windows at Microsoft. I'm not even sure if it's a rumor, I pretty sure someone at MS say it last year.

Really? I thought they were working on Midori somewhere around vista when they were working on MinWin, which became the base for Midori.

I doubt they will actually change the name of the most prominent Microsoft brand of Windows, which they have said MANY times is the main focus and drive of Microsoft. It would seem strange to change it from Windows when they just spent a crap ton of time and money into the Windows and Windows Phone brands.
