Future of Nokia Hangs on the Windows Phone Rollout

For Nokia, it comes down to this: is Microsoft's new phone software going to get it back in the smartphone race, or is it going to be too late?
After being the top seller of mobile phones in the world for 14 years, Nokia failed to meet the challenge when Apple in 2007 introduced the dazzling iPhone that caught the imagination of design-conscious customers and rattled mobile markets.
The Finnish company hit a downward spiral that has led to shrinking sales and market share, plant closures, thousands of layoffs and downgrades by credit agencies to junk status.
On Friday, research firm IDC said that in the July-to-September period, Nokia slid for the first time off the list of the top five smartphone makers in the world. It's still the second-largest maker of phones overall, but sales of non-smartphones are shrinking across the industry, and there's little profit there.

"Nokia says its Lumia 920 and 820 phones are just the beginning of a new range of Windows Phone 8 devices, but early evaluations suggest they lack the "wow" effect necessary to make a dent in the smartphone market."

What's this guy smokin'? All evaluations I've seen puts the 920 on top of other phones on the market and provided "wow" with it's specs. On the other hand many articles that didn't get written by Apple fanboys evaluated the iPhone 5 as not having any "wow" factor.

Why is there a Windows Phone article here?

I agree. This is just a news source I'd like to share, and the specs make me "wow" too. :)

Seriously, the 920 gives every top smartphone a run for their money and robs them blind. The ONLY real competitor it has is the Samsung GSIII. I give no love to Samsung for their impotent effort for Windows Phone, seems like they took to path of least resistance and rebranded their GSIII for Windows Phone. Kind of like how they branded one of their phones to look and feel like an iphone...

I'll be using my lumia 800 for another 15 months, I can't really fault it it any way. Windows phone is a great OS, and it works perfectly on smartphones and tablets.

Im still not a fan of it on my PC though.

I'll probably be using my Lumia 900 until next February or March if I get my screen fixed soon. I love it, love the Windows Phone platform and the design, but I made the choice to upgrade to escape The Intergalactic Empire (att) and the INCREDIBLE PureView camera and 1080p recording. That, along with wireless charging and being able to use my driving gloves on the touchscreen made the choice for me.

Basically, the hardware is attractive enough for me to justify the upgrade.

Some of you may not remember the days when Nokia made some of the greatest CRT monitors ever. I had two 20" Nokia's with a 1600 x 1200 screens. These at the time had some greatest graphics along with the sharpest picture (fonts were really sharp and care). Albeit, they couldn't match the up and coming LCD monitor, so they put their money into phones. Now it would appear that they are hoping that the new Win 8 Phone OS will save them from a certain downfall. Good luck to them.
