Goodbye, Windows 7 – Hello, Windows 8

I installed the final version of Windows 8 on my primary production machine last night. This was a leap for me after having been so terribly disappointed with the Consumer Preview. Today, I stand before the world a man of a changed mind. Windows 8 is, thus far, my favorite version of the operating system.

You can try, but I seriously doubt it. And I do believe that would be illegal.

No, your machine is not eligible for that offer. You will need the 39 upgrade to be legit. That's really not a lot to ask these days.

No, I don't think it would work. I believe you have to provide his key and such which would then most likely deactivate his copy of Windows when you activated.

Do yourself and type friend a.favor and just pay the 39 upgrade price and be done with it.

I got the answer from superuser.com :)
Yes you can! (Providing you have Windows 7, excluding Windows 7 Starter Edition).

According to the faq for the Windows Upgrade Offer:
Do I have to install the Windows 8 upgrade on the eligible PC, or can I install it on another PC?
The upgrade offer is tied to a Windows 7 PC purchased between 2 June 2012 and 31 January 2013, but you can choose to redeem the offer and install the upgrade on any compatible Windows-based PC with a qualifying base operating system.

Are all PCs purchased with Windows 7 between 2 June 2012 and 31 January 2013 eligible for the Upgrade Offer?
Eligible PCs are new PCs purchased during the promotion period with a valid Windows 7 OEM Certificate of Authenticity, product key for and preinstalled with:
Windows 7 Home Basic;
Windows 7 Home Premium;
Windows 7 Professional; or
Windows 7 Ultimate
Note: Windows 7 Starter Edition is not eligible for this offer.

Sounds like " qualifying base operating system" are the key words and that your computer needs to have been bought within that date range, too. If you'd bought it the same time as your friend it would work. But you didn't, so....

I need some advice about upgrading to win8
I currently have multiboot with win8 preview, win7HP, & Ubuntu. I want to keep using Win7 and Win8 on the same machine, can I download the win8 upgrade, install over win8 preview and keep win7?
If that's not possible, I have a 3 licence family pack of windows 7 of which I have used only 1, can I use the DVD to use up 1 licence for upgrading to win8(using the dvd disc during the install without messing up my current installation of Win7) ?

I see Win8 OEM full version 64 & OEM 64 Pro are selling at various venders on DVD. I've looked all around MS's website but I can't find a downloadable version. Is the full version downloadable? will it ever be? If it is downloadable does the DVD have some extras not in the download?
I've read elsewhere here the OEM version is the way to go but that $40 price and the instant gratification of downloading look mighty tempting.:D

You should be able to install over windows 8 preview, however I don't think you will be able to keep any of your data :p Microsoft said they wouldn't allow you to "upgrade" any pre - release versions of windows...

I just registered again and immediately got the 14.99 discount. I guess there might be issues if you signed up too early.

I just bought Win 8 Pro online ($39.99), downloaded the .iso and burned the image on DVD. I think I read that the product key given to me was good for "up to 5 installations..." Did I read that right, or is this a typical single-use installation?

[chuckle] I thought it was too good to be true! At least I won't waste the time trying... Maybe M$oft will eventually release a "family pack" similar to the Win7 offer. I have five computers between home and my office, and shudder at the cost of upgrading all of them.
