    VMware Workstation 9 - VMware Player 5

    Good news about VMs again.

The latest VMware Workstation 9 brings a new UI and it's designed for Windows 8.

    Read about it here:
    VMware Announces VMware Workstation™ 9

Also VMware Player 5 is available for download.

Looks like I posted this a bit fast, usually Jimbo beats me at VMware stuff. Sorry for this one.

    Cheers

D'oh. I have 2 licensed copies of VMWare Workstation at my office. One for me and 1 for a coworker. It's $119 to upgrade, or a free upgrade if you purchased after Aug 1st, 2012. I purchased on July 30, 2012. Sucks to be me

I'm gonna see how player runs. I got all, the installer + the tools for standalone install.
I'll post maybe a screenshot or two for the people who like the new UI.

    Well that was fast!

Why didn't nobody mentioned this earlier? I got the news only today. Oh man...
Guess I was to busy with work and the tests in VBox 4.2.

Added: It seems the price goes up each year because they add new features and improve it.

Edit: I'm just interested in VMware Player since it has a completely new UI + Linux 3D support
    That's all.

Player looks better than previous versions:
But they changed a thing or two... you need a license key for commercial use.

Let's hope it's just like version 4 and not gonna expire.

Not applicable means no expitation, logically, it should keep it up with its predecessors.

    That's all.

I've looked at the feature set and not sure if I am going to plunk down $119 for the upgrade from VMWare Workstation 8. I already spent about $170 when I bought VMWare Workstation earlier this year...so $119 more would put me nearly $300 out of pocket.

Any changelog found? I didn't found any except a 2 line one on filehippo:
    Download VMware Player 5.0.0 - Change Log - FileHippo.com
    # User Interface Improvements for Windows-Based VMware Player
    * The VMware Player user interface has been completely revamped.
    * The new user interface conforms with Windows standards, menus have been updated, the toolbar now matches Workstation in regular and full screen mode, new device icons have been added, along with many more improvements.
Yeah. They keep adding features and improve it, so the price goes up every year.
I'm pleased with the work they made with the new VM Player.

So then... you were talking about version 8 here:

It was a fast release this year, it caught us all by surprise.

    Sorry:
You're right to keep version 8 if you payed for it. But you can try the new VMware Player 5 for free on another OS or PC. (you know, with Workstation installed, you cannot install another VM Player alongside on the same os).

    In general:
There are some improvements in 3D including for Linux VM's and usb 3.0 is virtually available for the (newer Linuxes and Windows) VM's. You can now choose between usb 1.1, 2.0 and 3.0 even on Player UI.

It seems they released it now together with the release of Win8 and they added Win8 on the list + Unity mode that interacts better with Metro. For the rest you basically have all the features from WS8.

PS: Player doesn't expire and the key is not required (I kinda panicked when I made the screenshot)

    Cheers

    Hi there
No prob -- was testing a bit

Unity Full screen support and USB3 seem to be the things that are immediately noticeable -- as my new laptop has USB3 ports this is essentially a "Must Have" upgrade (got from work -- otherwise 119 USD for the upgrade).

    cheers
