Assistance with enabling Hyper-V on Windows 8 RP as its hanging

Hi I have installed Windows 8 RP and everything is going ok since i have updated the drivers to stop the system crashing. I can use the system fine now with no hanging, but there is always a but if i go to enable Hyper-V the system does and then reboots and on the second reboot just sits at the black windows screen with the round circle spinning around before eventually it stops moving and the PC hangs.

So my spec of my PC is

Intel i5 2500k - VT is enabled in the BIOS - CPU is OC to 4.4ghz but have also tried it on stock settings Hyper-V still crashes and then I have to revert back before Hyper-V was enabled.
16GB DDR3 RAM
2TB SATA III - OS loaded to this disk on a partition as I have Dual boot because of the issues with Win8RP. I first off only had the Win8RP image so its not the dual boot causing the issue.
750GB SATA II Hybrid with Nand Flash 4GB to make it similar to an SSD
2gb 6970 - using a ATI Windows 8 RP driver released in May this year
USB3.0 ICC card - Driver updated to Win7-64bit as was unstable on Win8 driver
PCI TPLINK Wireless-N card - Driver updated to Win7-64bit as was unstable on Win8 driver
Updated system drivers to latest from Gigabyte website.

I have also reloaded Win8RP with no WIFI card, USB3 ICC or HD 6970 card installed and just used onboard gfx with HDD connected and everything goes well except for enabling Hyper-V again so i ruled out my addons being the issue.

I have also disabled HPRET in the BIOS to see if that helps but hasnt IMO.

3rd time around of installing OS I used the ACHI driver from Gigabytes website which seemed to make things smoother.

So I have got Win8RP working just cant enable bloody Hyper-V can anyone help or advise why it could be causing the hanging?

As you can see I have tried a fair bit myself but the next step is debugging it, will it of saved a dmp before and after of enabling the Hyper-V?

Cheers Ryan

Hi and welcome to the forums!

Are we talking about Win8 64bit or 32bit? (because I didn't see that in the post)

What is HPRET? Sorry, got an older machine here.

I also have a i5 430M and VT is enabled in the BIOS and Hyper-V worked on my To Go Win8 x64 usb setup directly after reboot.

Some people had problems (hangs) with some new nVidia drivers and I don't know if it's the case with ATI too, but it's possible.
Install another (recommended or pretty stable) ATI driver and try again.

Updated system drivers to latest from Gigabyte website.
What motherboard is this? Install the drivers from Gigabyte only if they support Win8. If the drivers are for Win7 then don't install them. First look for Win8 drivers, if there are none, only then install the Win7 drivers.

I don't know if the board has some intel (chipsets) components in there but in that case, the latest intel chipset drivers from their site: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/ apply.

I'm also not sure what the precise cause for this hang can be, I just give some tips for a possible fix.

Cheers

i have somewhat of a same problem.
Intel Core i3-2120 @ 3.30Ghz
Gigabyte H67MA-USB3-B3MB
8 GB DDR3
win8 64 Bits RC
that is my configuration and it seems i can't make hyper V platform work

I don't know if it is a hardware problem or i am just stupid :zip:
Every time i go to windows features to enable the hyper v platform after reboot the os crashes(VT enabled from bios to)
Bios upgraded to F8

Anyone know what do i do wrong?!...

This is odd but it's also known not to work on all systems.
Are you guys getting any errors or warnings or just pure crashes/hangs?
Try to look in event viewer or minidumps on the system.

The BIOS needs a cold boot to enable VT.
Check to see VT is enabled on the desktop as sometimes the feature gets locked. Use CPU-Z for that.

Also try to enable/disable c-states (if available) in the BIOS and try again.

Try to enable Hyper-V again but expand and check that all features get enabled (all the management tools + the platform)
If one of the feaures is unavailable/grayed out then Hyper-V won't work on that system.

For those of you with overclocking, I would go with stock normal speeds until a fix is found (at least if a fix is possible).
For dual-boot, trial-boot or quad-boot systems I'm also not sure if hyper-v accepts that (I wonder if there is someone who managed to get hyper-v working on such a configuration).

Hyper-V would run as bare-metal hypervisor OVER your Win8 so your Win8 becomes a virtual machine. I don't know the effect on other operating systems multibooting on the same pc then, if they work or not (or that Hyper-V installs itself or not on that drive).
After installing Hyper-V, VT will not be available in the underlying Win8 system anymore and the installation of VirtualBox or VMware will be impossible.
You install Hyper-V to run virtual machines: that's the main purpose.

The first thing where to test (after confirming that all is well in the BIOS) is on a Win8 RP standalone disk (no dual boot), to see if you can enable it there.
I have Win7 as the main OS and Win8 RP to go usb and hyper-v is ok.

For all those interested in Hyper-V or have problems try to look here also:

Good luck

Had the same problem.

I found in another forum Windows 8 will boot OK with Hyper-V enabled if I disable GIGABYTE motherboard USB3 controller.

Then I installed a DeLock 4xUSB3 PCI-e expansion card and now Windows 8 boots OK with Hyper-V enabled.

Please note this card needs a SATA power connection.
