    How to save a VM.

I'm going to redo my HD and do a clean in stall of Win 8.1. I have Win XP on a VM. How can I save and restore that after the clean install? I did all the XP updates on the VM before they were pulled. That's why I want to save and restore it.

What VM software? VMWare, VBox, HyperV? Generally you save the folder it is in to another drive - this saves the config files and the hard disk(s). Then you can just restore that folder back after.

By default Hyper-V keeps its config files in a different location to the virtual hard disks whereas VMWare and VBox keep them in the same place.

Previous poster is spot on -- I regularly copy my five Windows XP mode files onto another partition, in a designated folder.

Thanks adamf, I'm using VMWare. So I just save the sub folder, Install windows, Install VMWare and copy the subfolder back to Virtual Machines?

Yup. Shut down the VM first and check that if you have more than one virtual hdd for your VM they are all in that folder. When you have re-installed and copied the folder back (to the same place) go into VMware and then file, open and select the .vmx file.
