Last night I did a bunch of updates on my Linux Mint 17 VMWare Player client. Updates seemed to go well. Now when I start it goes to black screen, do see the logo first. Any way to recover or do I have to re-install?

Don't really know as I can't get into it. I used the tray shield to look for and apply updates, would assume it was upgrading to latest release.

I'm asking because when I installed 17.1, it took 3 tries of rebooting until I got the desktop on the screen. My guess is it downloaded and installed GPU drivers in mean time. When I checked, proper AMD drivers were installed and that was not the case with 17.0, just some generic ones.

Hi Popeye
There were a few grub-2 updates recently... I assume those did not install properly.
Easiest way I find is to run LiveCD, download Grub customizer:
Once installed, run this command:
(it runs grub-install...)
OS
PC-DOS v1.0
Computer type
PC/Desktop
System Manufacturer/Model
IBM
CPU
Intel 8088, 4.77MHz
Memory

Graphics Card(s)
What's that?
Sound Card
Not quite
Screen Resolution
80 X 24 text
Hard Drives
dual 160KB 5.25-inch disk drives
I did the same updates yesterday and had no issues... It doesn't help but. I would also boot from a CD and reinstall GRUB as needed.
