Ms - Own Goal with Hyper-V on Win 8 -- Problem with Wireless

Seems Ms have scored an Own Goal here.

They want to get people to consider Hyper-V as opposed to VMware but they aren't making it easy.

W8 CP is obviously going to be tested on Zillions of Laptops which most people (not all) but I'm sure most will connect to Internet / Networks via Wireless.

Setting up Hyper-V to use Wireless can be done but again you have to go through hoops and Olympic size rings to get it to work.

When you need to connect a Virtual Machine to the network you need to define and create a "Virtual Switch". (Non Geeks - don't worry it's all done with a Wizard).

When you are using a wireless adapter it doesn't work (You can do it via creating a "legacy adapter" -- see Kari's tutorial on creating an Ubuntu VM on Hyper-V.) Use his method to set up the Wireless adapter to work.

I understand that as Hyper-V was designed as a Server / Enterprise class product the Host machine is likely to have SEVERAL WIRED network adapters - however W8 is being designed also for consumer use Ms need to look at this.

Hyper-V can see and bind with the wireless adapter as an external virtual switch under Windows 8 on my HP ProBook. I'm not sure what you're not seeing.

You only have to jump through hoops on Windows Server. And the hoops there only involve ICS or bridging an internal virtual network.

Honestly, I will never think to use Hyper-V on wireless or a notebook, so I have not try it. For me it's GbE or nothing. But I'm sure a lot of peoples will try it.

Well, Windows 8 will probably have more traction on the mobile side of things, so it's to be expected that they'd allow wireless external virtual switches.

It's quite useful --for example I can only logon to a work VPN from an XP machine --having a Virtual XP machine on a decent laptop with 8GB RAM is quite OK.

Hyper-V takes less resources than say vmware workstation (seems quite a lot less) and it's FREE !!.

BTW Mea -Culpa -- I could get it to work with Wireless -- it just didn't like the wireless adapter in the laptop (Atheros cheapo thingy). Seen lots of cases where people have problems with this particular type of adapter -- Atheros.

I can never understand it why manufacturers design a decent laptop -- and then put a real rubbish cheapo component into something I'm sure is used a lot --the Wireless adapter.

Switched it off (My laptop has a hardware switch on it to block the internal wireless adapter) and used a USB wireless adapter -- worked fine. (Edup one 9 EUR). It's also faster than the built in one -- has the 801-N spec too.
