XP on VM on SSD - Fast boot less than 2 secs

Hi there

I've now optimized my remaining Windows XP system --removed all the junk and duplicate programs which run on later versions of Windows so I've got a nice small tidy XP system -- basically Scanner (old canon photo scanner N1240), some VINYL editing and cutting software, OCR software, Minidisc software (still great for portable RECORDING !!) and an HP plotter and one or two odd programs. I don't need Photoshop or office any more in the XP system nor Ms Office, and I don't bother with the Internet on it either so no security problems there.

I've kept connectivity for printing (Epson 1400 printer) - the whole OS is 12 GB and it boots up in about 2 Secs (a VM running from a Linux host) --I've allocated it 1 GB - I'm sure I could run it in 768 MB too.

On my 8GB laptop it runs fine concurrently with a Windows 8.1 VM (allocated 4GB RAM for that) both on a Linux Host.

Whoever said SSD's weren't worth it !!.

Probably the person who can boot it up in the rare event they need it on their standard HDD in 8 seconds.

Funny thing you mentioned XP in a VM, my boots in about 8 seconds, which is not a disaster because it's been used once in a blue moon.
I meant to ask you something else. How to see and work with HDDs from XP in VM ?. Same thing is happening with Mint in same VM.
It's VMware VM player.

With XP I'm able to copy and paste from my host so haven't really tried mapping the host drive to the guest.

With Mint, I first had to install the latest updates through the shield on bottom right. That installed all the needed Samba stuff. Now I can get to the drive using Dolphin but Samba always wants a password to connect which doesn't exist. Searched and seems to be a common problem. Haven't taken the time to figure it out yet.

Host I can do too, but I have 3 more HDDs in the system, chock full of stuff but without access to them I have to transfer files using USB memory stick which is just cumbersome considering it's all in the same machine.

Maybe Jimbo will shed some light. I'm sure he'll respond when he can.

For Linux Host Just use SAMBA. Remember to add the user via smbpasswd to the samba user file otherwise no go -- and open the firewall.

Not sure what your connectivity problem is -- but it doesn't matter what machines the HDD's are on. SAMBA will provide Windows with the HOST directories while Windows networking will allow Linux to access the shared HDD's on the Windows system.

Configure SAMBA with the GUI (Linux Mint) and then from Linx after SU/SUDO run command TESTPARM to verify the configuration and service smb restart, service nmb restart (Your distro for restating a service might have a slighly different command - I'm using OPENSUSE 13.1 here. Dolphin is the built in file manager (like Windows / file explorer. If you have a different file manager check connections via SMB.

Here I've got XP and W8.1 GUESTS with connectivity between all 3 systems - Linux Host. Ensure networking is active in your VM's (minimum Host only or internal if using VBOX--I have mine to Bridged as these VM's are also acessible to my LAN with WINDOWS HOSTS on the hother machines in the LAN. Ensure sharing is enabled on Windows Guests to acess HDD's.

3 screenshots shown - HOST Linux can see Windows 8.1 and XP machine, Windows XP machine can see Linux and Windows 8.1 machine, Windows 8.1 machine can see XP and Linux machines. Q.E.D !!!!!
