    Virtual Machine Warning

Folks, I'm going to be accused of being a liar, an idiot, or an insane genius, but...

I installed the 8 Preview on the Oracle Virtual Machine today. When it wanted to reboot, it rebooted my entire computer, and BEFORE completing the start-up, tried to erase Windows 7 and install the 8 preview over it. I had already removed the installation disk. After five minutes of fighting, the installer gave up and spent another five minutes re-installing 7.

I have always read that a virtual machine cannot harm your computer, but that statement is not true.

Strange. Were you using a real DVD or an ISO for the installation? If you were using a real DVD and your real PC crashed then it would boot from the DVD if that is first in your boot order.

    Hi Vince,

It's the first time I heard something like this. I use VirtualBox and never had an issue with restarts.

If you don't know what caused the problem (use the latest Virtualbox to make sure: https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads) follow the Virtualisation tutorials here on the forum: Windows 8 Tutorials. Careful configure the vm: not all settings work, and diffrent operatng systems need diffrent settings. Sometimes VT-x is required on your processor (mostly when running x64 vm's). Some folks recommend VT-x for running Win8 (I never tested it without, can't tell if it works that way).

I have always read that a virtual machine cannot harm your computer, but that statement is not true.
I don't agree with this sentence until I see some proof. I don't know if it was the vm that made the host system flip. Never saw this happen.

    Good luck

I have try about all the VM desktop hosted solutions, including also ESXI and Hyper-V servers hosted one, and I never see a such mess.

Folks, I have never heard or read about something like this either, but I watched it happen to me. I was using an ISO burned onto a DVD, and I had the ISO in my hand when this happened. The 8 Preview was (and still is) installed on an Oracle Virtual Machine.

Incidentally, it is running very well.

I'm running Win 3.11, Win ME, Vista, Win 8 and Ubuntu in mine with no probs.

Certainly, I've never struck that one before....

Next time install in vBox from the .iso file, not from a DVD.

That's what I had tried to do. But at one point, the VM wanted me to tell it where the ISO file was, and the only choice it gave me was my DVD drive.

I have never seen that and I use vBox since 5 years with many installations. You must not have used the little icon that allows you to scroll thru your files.
