Solved Running a virtual machine on windows 8.1 NOT PRO edition

Hello everyone,

Young student working on my master's thesis, I have to run a few programs only available on linux.

As seen on almost all the sources I visited, I installed VirtualBox and downloaded the last Ubuntu "iso" file. after having installed the new OS on virtualbox, I tried launching it and got the very often found "VT-x is disabled in the BIOS" error.

The solution also given in all the sources I visited is "enable Hyper-V" in the "windows features turn on or off" menu. Problem is : I can't find this option (I even looked in the least probable sub directories, just in case)

I found out this feature was only available for "Pro" versions of windows 8/8.1.

My question is : Is it feasible for me to run a virtual machine, or even run a machine on dual boot on my default-installed-windows 8 machine? I don't have the money to buy the pro package (which, for some reason, is MUCH more expensive than the "previous windows to 8.1 pro" update).

and If yes : how?

Best regards and thank you for reading,

LinVl

(PS : my hardware is more than sufficient: 64bits i7-4700HQ processor, 8Gb RAM DDR3l)

If you get a message that VT-x is disabled in the bios, did you go through the bios? If you find an option called hyper-threading, enable it. Hope that helps.

Hi alkaufmann,

thanks for the fast response,

there is no "hyper-threading" options visible in the bios. but there is a "intel virtualization technology" option, which was already enabled.

Sorry that did not help. The only other thing I can suggest is make sure you have the latest version of Virtualbox.

hi topgundcp

For some reason, VmWare Player seems to work, unlike VirtualBox.

Thanks everyone for the help!

(btw, topgundcp, since your link sends to the procedure in order to install windows 8 on another computer, eventhough I'm sure you know it, I think it may make a confusion for people who might read the topic later on...)

Yes, it's the tutorial for installing Windows 8 but the procedure is the same if you want to install Linux Ubuntu/Mint etc...

I am running non Pro Win 8.1 (no Hyper-V here either) on my laptop and am able to run VirtualBox or VMWare Player without issue. Can't explain why it doesn't work for you. What version of VirtualBox were you using?

Hi there

Try this first

I've made a post about creating a portable version of Windows run as a Virtual machine from a LINUX Host.

Try running that first -- that will test whether the machine is capable of running VM's or not.

Don't activate the Windows VM though if you want to run the windows system as the HOST and not the VM.

http://www.eightforums.com/installa...make-portable-windows-system-any-version.html

If this works then your machine is perfectly capable of running VM's so we need to check out another solution.

Cheers
jimbo
