    File explorer

    Hello
I found a file after unsuccessfully trying to install a VM.

    It's location is C:>users>Peter> .VirtualBox.

I renamed it to 9.VirtualBox to see if after a while there was no trouble I could delete it.

I have done the same with other files and not had trouble but now I do.

Every time I delete it and rename it as it was, exactly, it says I must type a valid file name and reverts to the 9VirtualBox.

How can I change it back to the valid file name?

    Thank you
    Peter

Not sure if you have managed to resolve this in the last week but...

I assume you are referring to the folder rather than a file called .VirtualBox, this is a folder required by the virtualbox software.

In order to rename it you will need to use command line.
based on your post above i understand the folder is currently called 9.VirtualBox so to fix this you would run the following command.

    1. Open a command prompt (Click Start >> Type CMD >> press Enter or click CMD.exe in the search results)
    2. Copy / Paste the below line into the command window and press enter

    Code:
    move c:\Users\Peter\9.VirtualBox c:\Users\Peter\.VirtualBox
    Does that help?

If you use VirtualBox you should leave that folder alone. To reset the program's settings just the folder.
I don't know why you would rename it. It's the linux way of creating hidden folders: it begins with a dot; in Windows it wouldn't be considered valid while it's an extension-like name probably.

I am out of town for a while so the machine is not accessible.
I do not use a VM as I am not skilled enough but I gave it a try.
However, I managed to get the file to revert back to the way I first found it and am leaving it alone.
Sorry to cause this issue which I should have left alone but thank you for your kind replies.

To be honest i too take the "rename" option if i don't know what something is and see what breaks but unfortunately you were unable to change the name back however using the command line works (see my command in the previous post).

In terms of running a virtual machine, it's very little different than using your main machine but can be very good for testing.
All you would do is install the Operating System you want and then use it pretty much they way you would normally.

If you do decide to give it another go and get stuck just create a new thread here and we can help you out.

    Regards,
    Jamie

I appreciate that, Jamie. If I am going to try again I'll be here for sure.
