    OS ISO's...

Just out of curiosity, does anyone have an idea of where i could possibly download OS's to use with VM? like Linux, Unix, Win95-8, mac?

or would I have to have the actual CD in order to install into visualization?

For Linux normally go to the website of the distribution you want and you can download or get a link to a torrent from there. This is perfectly legal and the normal way to distribute it.

OSX even if you have Mac hardware you'll get short shrift from anyone on Mac forums (they will assume you are a pirate) and making a VM is fairly tricky and pretty pointless in the end really as graphics are terribly slow in a VM.

Old versions of Windows I don't know. Sure you can download an ISO from somewhere but why would you want to?

You don't need an actual CD though, no - certainly not.

Linux can be downloaded from distrowatch.com.

As long as you have a valid serial key, you can legally download an ISO for Windows and Mac from a torrent. Just search for '[Desired OS] Untouched'.

You might also check some Abandonware sites for the Windows versions older than XP.

    thats what i figured...

for later versions of windows, some games such as DOS based games or game made FOR that version of windows work, for legacy stuff, and yea, but i have heard of people loading Windows on their MACtops, after formatting their HD from FAT32 to NTFS, but just wanted to see if it worked :P

There are no legal downloads for older versions of Windows or even MS-DOS. If you want DOS you can use FreeDOS which is free. You can download Windows 7 and Windows 8 ISOs but that won't do you much good without a key and that isn't free. Remember that Windows is a commercial OS and is not free.

It is contrary to Apple's EULA install any version of Mac OS on non Apple hardware. Installation on a virtual machine is legal only if the host is a Mac.

Linux ISOs are freely and legally downloadable from many sources.

You don't need the actual CD, you can install with a ISO (virtual CD) or you don't even have to install at all: if you can find them, use virtual appliances, those are VMs that are already pre-installed and configured, you just need to launch them (or tweak the settings) because the OS is already installed.

For VMware you can get virtual appliances from the marketplace:
    https://solutionexchange.vmware.com/...gory_groups/19
Don't expect any free Windows and OSXes there, all free VMs are free OSes like Linux variations.
Importing VM appliances can be done easily in VMware Workstation and Player. Appliances in OVA or OVF format can be imported in VirtualBox as well.

    Keeping it legal:
Linuxes provide ISOs for free on their official websites.
If I'm correct, for Windows (just the latest versions) you can get free trials ISOs on the official sites as well.

You can get a 90 day trial version of Windows 8.1 Enterprise edition here:
    Download Windows 8.1 Enterprise Evaluation

A 180 day trial of Server 2012 is available here:
    Download Windows Server 2012

With a little work you can configure it to be much like Windows 8. Note that most free AV software will not run on a server OS.

    Hi there
This generic key will work for Windows 98 - all versions (now "abandonware")

    Generic Windows 98 Product Key

I think this link will work for Win 98 iso -- use the generic key above

Download Windows 98 SE, 98 plus! .iso file for free (Direct download links) | Download operating system software

Works fine as a VM on VMware

If you've got your own ISO (mine is from original ISO) use that - the generic key will work as it's now abandonware.

    Cheers
