@has been of great help for me to get a XP vhd up and running *except* I do not have Network or USB capabilities. Apparently I am suppose to get an option to install the drivers from the host computer (Windows 8.1); I do not see/get that option. My sequence is shown here.

Am I missing something?

Hey Rtcarry,

Sorry for late reply I am away at my home home visiting family.

Instead of going to the method we talked about last time lets go for a different route.

This is going to be using remote desktop, which you are going to have to make sure is enabled within your virtual machine.

How to enable remote desktop within windows XP:

How to Setup Remote Desktop on Windows XP

You will aslso make sure you can ping the host from your virtual machine and vise versa. Can you tell me if that is possible?

If not please check within your virtual switch this setting is ticked:

Right bring up run:

:winkey: + R

Then type in: MSTSC < press "ok"

Click "Show Options"

This will bring up more settings Remote Desktop Connections, in the Input field next to Computer input the IP address of your XP computer or the Computer name, then you can username - Example below:

Now click on the "Local Recourses" Tab:

Click "More"

Screen Shot 2014-02-22 at 18.14.53.png

Then highlight "Drives" and make sure that your USB/external hardrive is selected:

Screen Shot 2014-02-22 at 18.15.59.png

Click "OK"

Then click "Connect"

Screen Shot 2014-02-22 at 18.17.29.png

You may now get a message saying "Are you sure you want connect" going out on a limb you pressed connect, so click connect again :)

Screen Shot 2014-02-22 at 18.19.16.png

This will bring up a login page key in your credentials and click "OK"

Screen Shot 2014-02-22 at 18.22.15.png

Then you might have a message warning you about certificates, click "Yes"

Screen Shot 2014-02-22 at 18.23.28.png

Now I have logged in to the virtual machine and loaded up computer manager to show that it has mapped my local resources to the virtual machine. I also screen capped the host name so you can see it correlates to the rest of the screenshots:

I hope this works for you I am not able to test it in Windows 8 the only machine I am able to remote in to today is a Windows Server with Hyper-V

All the best!

Cheers,
Harry

Before going any further and miss using your time, I poked around in the network connections of my Windows 8.1 computer and I believe I may have found the root cause of my problems...but not sure. To keep in mind, I have been using Win XP since it was introduced and since the software my client uses is based on Delphi 5 (does not work on Win 8). So, the in's and out's of Windows 7/8 are quite foreign (at least the improvements). I do have a LAN (equally old), but my Win 8.1 is not connected to it at this time.

On the screen shot there are boxes for VirtualBox and Hyper-V. If I check Hyper-V, it says that my other connects will be disabled. Do you know what that means? And should it be checked and the correct drivers installed?

With appreciation...

Hello Todd,

This is because you will not be able to bind this network bridge to both virtualbox and Hyper-V. Also do you have any need to have Virtualbox on your system as you are now running Hyper-V? You should not be able to run them both at the same time anyway... or for that matter run them both at the same time Hyper-V will take over as the primary hypervisor unless you do something along the lines of changing the virtualisation type in the boot configuration with something like bcdedit.

If you do not need it you can go along the lines of cleaning up your system and unstalling it.. might also be a good idea to start fresh with your networking.. for example deleting the bridge then going in to Hyper-V manager > Virtual Switch and creating a new external Vswitch:

If you are planning on using that virtual switch bridge in the screenshot and not recreating yo will need to make sure Hyper-V extensible switch is enabled to have an chance of this working.

Can you screenshot your network connection and your VirtualSwitch configuration for me. Also explain exactly what you are trying to achieve Todd and we will go through this step by step :)

Chers,
Harry

I am sorry, it might have that I have missed it but I see no mention of legacy network adapter in your threads.

For the XP Hyper-V vm to connect to internet, it needs a so called virtual legacy network adapter. You need to remove the network adapter, add a new legacy network adapter and bind it to an existing switch. See this tutorial, part 4: http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/19359-hyper-v-virtual-switch-manager.html

All my XP virtual machines connect directly to Internet when booted first time without any additional drivers being installed, simply by using Hyper-V legacy network driver:

Thank you though Kari, it is an important bit of of information.

Vista and older guests need a legacy NIC, as well as some Linux distros.

Yes, entering the Legacy Network was the answer! Thank you so much...hard to know how one could have figured out all of those steps!!!

With appreciation to Kari....

My next challenge may be the USB, but I am re-installing XP on a new Hyper-V machine. Turns out the VHD I downloaded from MS is only a 30 day evaluation...darn. Fortunately, I have a XP disk and Product Key.

Thanks again....
