Hi

I would like to run ubuntu as virtual machine on my win 8 desktop pc. I installed vmware player and then separatley downloaded an ubuntu iso- couple of problems:-

  • There seems no option on vmware player to create a VM
  • VMware player doesn't seem to recognise iso files - its looking for a vmx file - which I don't appear to have....

This is my first venture into vm's - got the feeling I have missed something pretty big.....

We'd be glad to help him out with vmware player. I'm a vmware guy. Personally, I think Hyper-V sucks balls.

You should be able to create a VM with VMware Player. You have to create a new VM, and then mount the ISO file as the CD/DVD drive within that VM and then install the OS like normal.

Hi there
Another one for VMware -- HYPER-V seems to have rather too many issues -- especially where networking is concerned. I've used VMWARE for donkeys years - rarely if ever are there problems and they are usually solved quite quickly. Even if you run on a LINUX HOST and a module fails a fix is created quickly enough.

I'm not a YOUTUBE Fan for learning / tutorials -- I'm a bit old fashioned here - I prefer DOCUMENTS that I can scroll backwards / forwards etc - the modern way unfortunately is to make videos of everything -- unless you are showing a very complex piece of machinery I try and avoid the Video tutorial --nothing wrong though in Video LECTURES etc - a totally different ball game though.

So fire up VMware player and click on the Create Virtual machine wizard -- now you'll get a whole set of on screen instructions - just follow them through.

If you get stuck later just post again but start your VM creation with VMware player (screen shot enc).

ensure you have downloaded the LATEST version from the VMware site - there's a bit of confusion now - as they call it PRO and charge businesses - it's still FREE for individual users though.

https://my.vmware.com/web/vmware/downloads

Screen shot VMware player create vm. (Note after powering on the VM install the VMware tools - this fixes screen resolutions, mice sensitivities, 3-d graphics, audio etc. Modern VM's can play a decent number of games and play DVD's too).

Cheers
jimbo

Retired in 2015 after working in the tech industry for 41 years. First 10 years as a Technician, the rest as a programmer/software engineer. After 1 year of retirement, I was bored so went back to work as a Robotic Process Automation Consultant. Retired for 3rd (and final) time in 2019.
This is an excellent tutorial that Shawn made. I used it to get started and now I have 6 Linux distros and Win 8.1 running under VMware Player. Works like a charm.

http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/2899-vmware-player-install-windows-8-a.html

PS: The tutorial will show you how to install any system. You just have to chose whatever system you want in lieu of Win8. For some Linux systems (e.g. Mint), you have to select Ubuntu. I guess because they are Ubuntu based. Here is a little tutorial I made for installing Zorin - another Ubuntu based distro.

VMware Player - Install and Setup Zorin - Windows 7 Help Forums

Just be aware that the commands for setting up the VMware Tools are different for every guest system. E.g. Zorin is different than Mint which is different than Windows 8, etc.

What version is that? 2? 2.5? (you only have open and no create options) ;)
That might not work well on W8s.

We recommend a higher version in any case, to begin with best case scenario: use version 6.

EDIT: "Create VM" ability was introduced in Player version 3.
