How to Get Windows XP Mode on Windows 8

I saw this article here. How to Get Windows XP Mode on Windows 8
I have Windows XP SP3 already listed in compatibility mode.Click image for larger version
I am running Windows 8 pro. I really don't understand what they are trying to tell you here. I have never had an older program to run with the compatibility mode anyway. Any thoughts?

    Hello Clint,

    Those are two different things.

Your screenshot is for having a program installed in Windows 8 to run in "XP compatibility mode" as if it was running in XP instead of Windows 8.
XP Mode is a preactivated virtual machine of XP that can only be installed and used on Windows 7 Professional, Windows 7 Ultimate, and Windows 7 Enterprise. Otherwise it would violate the EULA.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply Brink. I'm still confused. If I try to run a program in Windows 8 in Windows XP SP1 compatibility mode, The program won't work. When I install it on my wife's computer with Windows XP, It works.

Unfortunately, not all older programs will be able to run properly even in compatibility mode.

    What program is this?

You might double check to see if it's listed in the link below as being able to run in Windows 8. In addition, is there a newer version of the program available that fully supports Windows ?

    What program is this?
It's called Will Maker 2012. It had an update in Dec. 2012. That doesn't seem that old to me. It was not in the list at the link.
There is a newer version called 2014. It doesn't seem right to have to pay $60 for an upgrade of a program that's less than a year old. If Windows XP programs won't run on Windows 8, the option shouldn't be there. Just ranting.
I'm not up on the virtualization thing. I may give it a try.
    Thanks Brink.

According to the system requirements WillMaker 2012 is compatible with XP, Vista, and Windows 7. Windows 8 is not listed.

You might see how it runs with Windows 7 compatibility mode selected instead.

It doesn't work in Windows 7 compatibility mode either. That's what I don't understand. It works fine on my wife's XP PC. I just wanted it on mine.
I'm going to study up on the virtualization thing. I have other older programs that I want to run on my PC too.
It's just gotten to be a challenge.
    Thanks anyway Brink.

The only other thing I can think of is that the program may use a 16-bit process that is not compatible with 64-bit Windows. Does the program run in any other 32-bit Windows you have installed?

Just for kicks, you might run the compatibility troubleshooter to see what it reports back.

Otherwise, you may need to create an XP virtual machine.
