    OpenGL problem in VirtualBox

I am running Windows 8 Pro on host and Windows XP on guest. I have been having trouble setting OpenGL 2.0 in VirtualBox, and I suspect the problem is the integrated HD3000 graphic chip. Anybody with similar problem and better yet a solution?

That will require 3D acceleration in the guest.
How many graphical memory do you have? What CPU is that? (CPU is also important when using powerful VM's).
Important: That gfx card uses shared memory, so the more RAM do you have the more it will use (for 4GB RAM it will use about 1GB - 2GB for graphics from what I've seen, depending on card).

Can you enable the checkbox for 3D acceleration in VM setings?

If not, the host graphics may not support it. The guest graphics is still way slower compared to the host, even if 3D is supported.

VirtualBox 3D acceleration is still experimental and in some cases buggy (switch between fullscreens / scale modes).

VMware Player has better 3D support. If you try this out and a warning says no 3D acceleration available or disabled it means the host graphics is not powerful enough. Latest versions require 64bit host OS.

The host's CPU is Core-i7 3770k and has 8 GB RAM. The integrated graphic chip basically uses motherboard RAM. As for the guest both "Enable 3D acceleration" and "Enable 2D Video acceleration" boxes are checked in VirtualBox setting. Guest has video RAM set at 128 MB, which is the maxmium allowed on that setting.

Well it's a good CPU with more than enough RAM so it shouldn't pose any problems.

It means that you stumbled across the limit in VBox and use a program that exceeds the guest limitations.
It must be a heavy program to run in the VM...

As I said 3D acceleration doesn't always work in VirtualBox and I never relied on 2D as well.

In any case, the guest will not use the host graphics just some of it's features. It means guest will be named VirtualBox Graphics Display Adapter and not Intel HD 3000.

Try VMWare Player as well to see if any difference.
