    Hi there
a number of people have reported issues with VBOX and W8.1 -- I'd suggest using the FREE VMWARE PLAYER --It's free and IMO beats VBOX every time - VM's always seem stable, VMWARE is a huge profitable company so the FREE PLAYER always gets a lot of updates from the paid versions such as VMware workstation. 3-D is a breeze and current video improvements mean that DVD playing and even running some complex games are now possible on a VM which wan't really possible decently until a short while ago.

There's a free converter so you can convert your VBOX VM to VMWARE format without having to install the VM again.

(After creating the VM install the VMWARE tools at first power on install in the GUEST machine of course -- this is the same as the VBOX Additions).

I also like the fact that VMware also allows you to run the VM's in the background so you can logoff the HOST and still access the VM's --remotely too and users can even have accounts on your VM's without needing one on the HOST machine.

    Cheers

    Hi there
Works for me -- did you install the Guest from SCRATCH using the ISO -- that's what you should do if you are running W8.1 using a Virtual Machine.

I'm at work now but I can post an image my 8.1 VM a bit later. I'm running it from a W7 Host - but I'll also see if I can power on the VM from a W8 Host too. The same VM should work but just to make the test 100% certain I'll re-create the VM using a W8 Host !! and then load it up on both W7 and W8 hosts.

    Cheers

    Hi there
Is the Virtualisation (VT) enabled in the BIOS (Real machine) - most are these days - especially with an Intel i7 processor but you should check anyway.

In the VM settings select SINGLE core, 2GB (better 4GB). If you use too small amount of RAM you'll get problems.

The other issue is possibly with UEFI BIOS. I'm not sure that a VM supports UEFI in the "Virtual Bios" so ensure the "Normal or standard" installation is used not UEFI for the VM. At VM power on go into the "Virtual BIOS" and see what options are available.

Otherwise just check creating ANY VM even say a current W8 t(not W8.1) to see if it powers on OK -- don't bother to install anything or activate it just see if it installs and Powers on (BOOTS).

It should only take around 6 mins to create a minimal W8 VM -- don't bother with drivers or anything - the object of the test is just to see if a VM will BOOT at all on your machine.

    Cheers

In VMware you must enable UEFI BIOS manually.

Add this line in your vmx file:
    firmware = "efi"
Then you have UEFI BIOS and even can test GPT drives.
