    Windows 8.1 and VirtualBox

After installing the W 8.1 Preview, seems the VirtualBox networking is out.

This is using the latest VBox 4.2.14.
Re-installing VirtualBox solves it but duplicate driver entries still remain, one being the old one.

    Hi there
works fine in VMware workstation and VMware player(Free)

Posting this thread from W8.1 preview. I'm actually running the w8.1 preview (X-64) from a W2003 server host using VMware workstation running a W 8.1 x-64 Virtual machine -- Note you CAN run a 64 bit guest VM from a 32 bit HOST OS but of course max RAM for HOST + GUEST is only 4GB. Testing on an old Intel Pentium IV machine which I have as a file and Internet server (W2003) -- runs just fine.

    Haven't had any problems yet.

    Cheers

    Hi Jimbo,

The issue is about VirtualBox being installed on Win8 and then upgrading to 8.1 host. This is a HOST not a VM (as a VM is fine).

So VBox is installed on 8.1 and the networking (bridged) has some minor issues.

Does VMware gets installed on a 8.1 host?

    Thanks.

    Hi there
it runs fine on 8.1 -- tested running it as a 2nd level virtualisation -- my 8.1 system is itself a VM but I installed VMware workstation 9.0.2 on the Virtual machine and then ran an XP Virtual machine on that (still worked reasonably). So my Virtual W8.1 machine as acting as a HOST for a lower level XP virtual machine. The whole lot was driven from a Windows 2003 SERVER HOST. !!

The 2nd level virtual machine ran OK because I was using SSD's for the Virtual machines -- I wouldn't normally expect to get any sensible performance from a 2nd level virtual machine from a standard HOME computer but it's an interesting POC (Proof of Concept) exercise to check something actually works even though you wouldn't use it as a production type machine.

If you try this out without SSD's you'll probably get very slow performance -- my W2003 server OS is on one SSD and the VM's on another SSD. I'm about to upgrade the w2003 server to w2012 R2 server too once I've done separate tests.

    Cheers

    That's good news. Thanks guys!

VBox works as well, just need to figure out what those weird "no device ID" driver issues are in my first screenshot.

Notice that Device Manager in 8.1 shows more (hidden as well) devices by default.

Hi, Im having the same issue. When I install latest VBox on win 8.1 host I loose all network connections.

@Hopachi, my device manager looks identical to yours under the network adapters.

Uninstalling VBox does resolve the netword issues but Im unable to remove the unused adapters.

Everytime I reinstall VBox the network issue comes back.

@Hopachi did you get this resolved? If so, whats the resolution to this?

    Thanks!

    Hello justclint,

    Welcome to EightForums.

I didn't resolved the issue with the unused adapters. Still see them in the list.
Try to right-click and uninstall the adapters after you uninstall VirtualBox: that way only one remained instead of 3.

I'll post here when something new comes up.

The host-only network adapter here was needed to be added again since it was missing.
    This fixes one driver issue.

For the rest, I'm nut sure how to fix those yet... virtual bridged adapters to existing network hardware

    Update:

I've tested an XP VM and there is internet and a working network.

    The drivers still show this:

I suppose the most important one is fixed here, the one I'm using online. Since Wifi is off for the moment, I suppose the bridge adapter still shows an issue. Maybe reinstalling the Wifi and all other network card fixes it, it's just a theory.
