After installing the W 8.1 Preview, seems the VirtualBox networking is out.

drivers.png

This is using the latest VBox 4.2.14.
Re-installing VirtualBox solves it but duplicate driver entries still remain, one being the old one.

Hi there
works fine in VMware workstation and VMware player(Free)

Posting this thread from W8.1 preview. I'm actually running the w8.1 preview (X-64) from a W2003 server host using VMware workstation running a W 8.1 x-64 Virtual machine -- Note you CAN run a 64 bit guest VM from a 32 bit HOST OS but of course max RAM for HOST + GUEST is only 4GB. Testing on an old Intel Pentium IV machine which I have as a file and Internet server (W2003) -- runs just fine.

Haven't had any problems yet.

Cheers

Hi Jimbo,

The issue is about VirtualBox being installed on Win8 and then upgrading to 8.1 host. This is a HOST not a VM (as a VM is fine).

So VBox is installed on 8.1 and the networking (bridged) has some minor issues.

Does VMware gets installed on a 8.1 host?

Thanks.

Hi there
it runs fine on 8.1 -- tested running it as a 2nd level virtualisation -- my 8.1 system is itself a VM but I installed VMware workstation 9.0.2 on the Virtual machine and then ran an XP Virtual machine on that (still worked reasonably). So my Virtual W8.1 machine as acting as a HOST for a lower level XP virtual machine. The whole lot was driven from a Windows 2003 SERVER HOST. !!

The 2nd level virtual machine ran OK because I was using SSD's for the Virtual machines -- I wouldn't normally expect to get any sensible performance from a 2nd level virtual machine from a standard HOME computer but it's an interesting POC (Proof of Concept) exercise to check something actually works even though you wouldn't use it as a production type machine.

If you try this out without SSD's you'll probably get very slow performance -- my W2003 server OS is on one SSD and the VM's on another SSD. I'm about to upgrade the w2003 server to w2012 R2 server too once I've done separate tests.

Cheers

That's good news. Thanks guys!

VBox works as well, just need to figure out what those weird "no device ID" driver issues are in my first screenshot.

Notice that Device Manager in 8.1 shows more (hidden as well) devices by default.

Hi, Im having the same issue. When I install latest VBox on win 8.1 host I loose all network connections.

@Hopachi, my device manager looks identical to yours under the network adapters.

Uninstalling VBox does resolve the netword issues but Im unable to remove the unused adapters.

Everytime I reinstall VBox the network issue comes back.

@Hopachi did you get this resolved? If so, whats the resolution to this?

Thanks!

Hello justclint,

Welcome to EightForums.

I didn't resolved the issue with the unused adapters. Still see them in the list.
Try to right-click and uninstall the adapters after you uninstall VirtualBox: that way only one remained instead of 3.

I'll post here when something new comes up.

Look into the preferences:
netw.png
The host-only network adapter here was needed to be added again since it was missing.
This fixes one driver issue.

For the rest, I'm nut sure how to fix those yet... virtual bridged adapters to existing network hardware

Update:

I've tested an XP VM and there is internet and a working network. :thumb:

The drivers still show this:

I suppose the most important one is fixed here, the one I'm using online. Since Wifi is off for the moment, I suppose the bridge adapter still shows an issue. Maybe reinstalling the Wifi and all other network card fixes it, it's just a theory.

I guess I have a similar problem. Installed Virtual Box 4.2.14 on Windows 8.1 Pro Preview.
VirtualBox Host-Only Network is causing problem with my existing Realtek NIC.

Issue: Windows put on sleep mode. Then wake up windows from sleep and Realtek NIC has no network connection.
Enable / Disable Realtek or VirtualBox Host-Only Network does not help.
Realtek NIC goes to Unidentified network connection with no IP information.

Same thing happens when I first turn on the pc. shows no network connection.

To get Realtek NIC to work again every time the pc needs to be rebooted.

-I tried installing realtek driver then put pc to sleep and back on. same issue.
-Tried disabling VirtualBox Host-Only Network. put pc on sleep and back on. same issue.

Uninstalling Virtual box fixes the problem.

Hi there
I'd suggest switching to use VMware player --it's also FREE and seems to work without any problem.

I believe you can also convert the VHD so you shouldn't have to re-install the Virtual Machine again. Note though after installing a VMWARE virtual machine you have to run the VMWARE TOOLS install from the Virtual machine the first time after it's powered on.

Cheers

How To Remove Stuck Drivers

I want to confirm I am having the same issues with Virtualbox after the 8.1 update. Immediately after the update my Wi-Fi would not detect any networks at all. Once I noticed the corrupt drivers from Virtualbox I tried a re-install. It still did not work. I had to completely uninstall Virtualbox and then re-install my wireless card drivers to get any Wi-Fi connectivity. I do, however, have a solution for removing the stuck drivers!

To remove the stuck drivers (or any frozen drivers for that matter) right-click on the offending driver and select 'Update Driver Software'. Then choose 'Browse my computer for driver software'. Select 'Let me pick from a list of drivers'. De-select the 'Show compatible hardware' checkbox and you should now see a long list of incompatible drivers. Select any except the actual Oracle drivers, making sure to remember which one. Install it, ignoring any warnings about incompatible hardware. It should now show up in your device tree. Now you can simply remove it by right-clicking and selecting 'Uninstall'.

I hope we can find a solution soon, I would like to be able to use Virtualbox again...

Ok I registered just to share my solution after coming across this thread googling with the same problem.

What Happened-
I installed the Windows 8.1 Preview gui

Symptoms-
- I could not ping or connect to any of my machines on my home network or my virtualbox machines.
- Virtualbox drivers in device manager had yellow exclamation marks and could not be removed or updated.

My Solution-
To get network connectivity back it appeared the 8.1 install changed firewall and homegroup settings so my home network was now currently 'Public'. To change this back I went to Network Sharing center and turn on my Homegroup and set it back to private network. After this was done my other machines were able to ping my Windows 8 machine again.

To fix the Virtualbox errors I uninstalled it completely. To get rid of the stuck Virtualbox entries in Device Manager you need to select them then select to Update Driver, Browse drive then select 'Let me pick from a list of drivers n my computer...". Choose any driver listed, the point here is it attaches a driver to this entry so it can be removed cleanly. Once the driver is attached the name will change from Virtualbox ethernet.. etc to the name of the Device you selected from the driver list. Simply now right click it in Device manager and select uninstall to get rid of it. Reinstall virtualbox and restart.

My Citrix Reciever also spazed out after the Windows 8.1 preview install, I haven't got back round to reinstalling that yet but it should be fine.

I have to say as an outsider just looking for a specific solution this was the most unhelphul answer and was incredibly iritating. Just saying.

My solution: unistall virtualbox, then install it (while installing uncheck "network host support"). After that you will have internet both in host and guest OS.

We'll have to see how 4.2.16 works since it's 8.1 aware.

Removing the drivers with issues doesn't seem to work but as I posted before, networking was fixed.

I've installed Vbox 4.2.16 on W8.1 prev.

The fixes they mention are for guests and the host still has those networking issues.

Well, after removing 4.2.14, the weird networking drivers still remain on the list even if VirtualBox isn't anymore: so the vbox bridged networking also exists without VBox! It's womething we didn't see up to Win 8.0... Are this compatibility issues, driver related?

Then during the install of 4.2.16, the installer mentions that you need to rename the existing adapter since no (adapter) duplicates are possible... it's clear somewhere there will be duplicates.

The preferences window @ the networking tab has duplicates and removing one of them is allowed BUT the initial one (with issues) still remains and is not possible to remove it!
vbox-net.png

From this point, the only way I figured to remove the VBox networking from taskbar is to disable or remove the driver's entry in Autoruns for instance, and reboot.
vbox-net2.png

There can be more than one VBox* name here... to be unchecked or removed... removed because Device Manager already mentions a corruption in the Registry (see below).

vbox-net3.png

NOT RECOMMENDED the next step:
I looked (or rather say messed) in the Registry in searching the adapters and they can be found indeed but removing some of those entry's messes with the entire networking system (for instance the entire 'Airplane Mode' option was removed from the list).

What I see here is that after some modifications brought in 8.1 preview, the VirtualBox installer is unable to remove previous adapters (this is also an upgrade from 8.0 to 8.1 while VBox was installed) and VBox networking drivers are less compatible than expected... and problematic devices will appear in Device Manager which are not possible to remove or they will be very hard to do even if possible.

For the moment, try to keep those duplicate adapters if you use 8.1 preview as VBox 4.2.16 will not bring much improvement to the hosts. This later version is the best we have but if we used older versions before, we still need a proper way in cleaning those drivers issues. As already mentioned in this thread, using VMware Player will spare you this kind of misery until a VBox fix is available (which I still believe will be out pretty soon, probably in the next version. )
