I have XP pro running as a guest on a Windows 8 PC. I now want to get onto the internet wirelessly to download some applications and also get the USB working to download work files onto XP. How do I do these two tasks?

I have read that VMware may have problems with USB3 ports. Unfortunately all my ports are USB3. Is this terminal?

For the network, a default NAT config is more than enough:

for the USB, just add a USB controller, all will work, you can even use USB 2.0 virtually, host ports are backwards compatible.

    That's basically it.
USB device is recognised by VMware when plugged in and shows on the staus bar. Shows it is active in the settings section. But it does not appear in My Computer on the guest OS.

It has to be installed in the guest OS as well, something which happens automatically. If this is XP, it might not be recognized but that not really expected.

Look in the Device Manager of the guest and look for USB or unknown or not working devices.
