    Just an idea:

What if you create a new local administrative user account, log in to that account and try to use your virtual machines from it?

I tried the second admin account with the same group membership, but no change. The only other option I have for a nic is a USB WiFi stick, I'll try it later when its not being used for doing home work. In the meantime, I'll try different drivers.

OK. It's past 1 AM here, in an hour or so I will sign out but I am back tomorrow afternoon CET, early morning your time.

Before testing the USB WiFi, disable Hamachi, NIC and switch.

After a few more hours of messing around, I bit the bullet and did a Windows 8 Refresh. Everything works just fine now, except I have to reinstall everything.

However I'd still like to figure out what went wrong so I can fix it if it happens again.

An understandable solution. Let's hope it will continue working for you.

Not knowing about your backup strategies, here's a few useful links to tutorials. A recent restore point or system image would have allowed you to restore system to a point before the issue started. Faster than reinstalling all software and virtual machines.

    With Windows 8 native tools:

System Image with free edition of Macrium. Tutorials at Seven Forums, procedure is the same in Windows 8:

This tutorial about virtual switches might be useless for you as you seem to know them pretty well but adding it anyway:

    Good luck.

    Hey guys,

I'm having the exact same problem as Kerberos42. I just installed Hyper-V on my Win 8 computer this morning, and when I set up the vSwitch and configured it as External, I lost all network connectivity. IPCONFIG lists no adapters, Ethernet and vEthernet adapters both show Enabled but not connected.

I really don't want to go the Win 8 refresh route as I have a lot of custom applications installed and I'd rather not set everything up again. Just wondering if anyone else has seen this thread and found a solution.

    Thanks!

    Greg

That error message tells that the creating of a virtual switch has failed because of invalid name. Please tell as exactly as possible what you do when trying to create a virtual switch.
