W7 VM on Samsung 840 SSD QUICKER than W8 HOST on Spinner

    Hi there
this is NOT a post over relative merits of W7 / W8 but all I want to say here is that using a spare 840 Samsung 250 GB SSD (SPARE !!! -- actually I've just had a decent tax refund so I thought I'd get another decent SSD !!! ) I copied a W7 VM with the minisap system on it to the SSD.

I plugged the SSD into a USB 3 port on a laptop via the USB2 (yes USB2) ==> sata interface adapter that came with the drive (and actually it was on a USB3 HUB shared with two other USB3 passport external drives) and fired up the VM.

Response time was FASTER (after VM boot and starting the SAP development system) than on the HOST system !!! and this was with a USB2 adapter rather than a USB 3 one.

So guys -- using an SSD even externally via USB2 connection is still WELL worth while for storing your VM on-- this VM even with the test SAP on it is actually USEABLE even from a modest laptop -- although I have 8 GB RAM in the laptop and have allocated 4GB for the VM --SAP is quite a large resource hog. !!

Price I paid today for new of 840 SAMSUNG 250 GB SSD is 142 EUR at Media Markt -- not the cheapest store in Brussels --that's however still cheaper than what I paid for the slightly older 830 120 GB Samsung SSD about a year ago in the same store !!.

I'm 1000% converted to SSD's not only for OS'es but also for running VM's.

Get an SSD if you have any spare cash -- ABSOLUTELY WORTH THE DOSH.

Now going to put an SSD into the laptop's internal HDD slot.

    Cheers
    jimbo

Can't agree with you more. I do not have a spinner in my system at all. Gave all my HDDs to my oldest son for his server.

Thanks JLyman, just order one. . .good find. . .

    Hi there
just ordered one of these myself. Back home for a few days -- had to go through a few hoops and rings to get them to export -- however Iceland is NOT in the EU so no problem there -- but you solve one problem and get another one -- you can only export so much currency from a local Bank until the whole Banking mess is completely solved -- we're getting out of the mess however unlike what seems to be most of the Eurozone -- However Cash and a money order from a POST OFFICE worked fine --amazing how the Politicians don't even understand their OWN rules !!!! (or maybe they do and leave loopholes like this on purpose !!).

Looking forward to testing the drive.

    Cheers

The M500 is the newest. Yep, I like it.

But I don't know what happened with the M4 series: I wanted to get one of those for the laptop but they are like discontinued?

    The M4 capacities were 128, 256 and 512gb

    But the M500 is like 120, 240, 480 and 960gb (this last one is roughly 1TB. )

Definitely the M500 has also better speeds but for those of us who targeted at capacity 256gb now get 240gb.
