It seems that hyper x doesnt support win 98 so i have move onto VMware player and accounted a new set of problems.

i have created a new VM and added the win98 iso and a boot disk img i downloaded.

problem is i cant get them to install.

i bring up the boot menu and it gets to install windows 98 from CD ROM then says install files not found.

this is the same iso that was able to get further under hyper x but crashed at the end.

anyone able to help?

Hi there
With VMware player just launch the create virtual machine wizard and point the installer "Disk" to the ISO IMAGE downloaded
Then it should all work automatically.

When the VM starts installing ensure you click Install from CD in the popup screen once the vm starts to install

After the initial setup choose Boot from Hard disk in the boot options.

The W98 files should look like this -- (size of disc is 625MB - so ensure you downloaded OK).

Just open the iso file in Windows explorer (file explorer) in W8 to see what's on the disc -- W8 mounts .ISO's directly -- don't waste time burning a disc.

I've also enclosed an image of what the directory structure should look like.

YOU DO NOT NEED A BOOT.IMG at all for this.

Cheers

Yes, look at Jimbo's post here above for details because Win98 works fine in VMware Player.

I got one of those disks with Win98 SR2 and it boots without floppy.

Make sure you insert the disk and select it, then at boot choose "start with CD-rom support when it asks you.

Then setup should pop up by itself (if VMware detects os and auto-install is working).
If you get a command prompt only situation, then just type setup.exe and it should start the install right away.

Good luck

    That's basically it.
You may have to choose "Start Computer with CD-ROM support", use fdisk to partition your virtual disk, reset your VM, then "Start Windows 98 Setup from CD-ROM".

Quick question. Is there a way of making the screen any bigger? It's only about 10" in the middle of my monitor!

Are there any settings I can change as its very sluggish, also struggling to install any of the games I want to play!

Do I need to enable intel vt?

My CPU is a 2500k so I think that supports hardware virtualisation

Install the VMWare Tools. Then you will be able to adjust screen resolution just like a real computer.

Playing games in a VM is usually a recipe for disaster. The graphics subsystem just isn't there for gaming.

Why are you all using VM ware or Virtualbox on windows 8 pro it supports native hyper-v no issues with legacy oses on the windows side with that stuff!~Enable Hyper-V in Windows section; turn windows features on and via control panel programs and features and then left hand side you'll find the goods. Check hyper-V have it installed restart et voila!

Client side hyper v requires a procedure that supports slat, the others do not. Hyper v support for Linux isn't very good, but is with the other options. And I use vmware vSphere.at work, so I use workstation for consistency reasons.

Also:
VMWare and VBox have sound support in the guest. Hyper-V has this only through remote desktop.
For some a minor issue, for others a bigger deal. Depends on usage.

Hi there
you only need to enable intel VT if you are running 64 bit GUEST OS'es. Other Guests will run just fine without this setting. On newer CPU's this function is automatically enabled and I don't think there are any options in the BIOS to turn it on or off.

If you enable HYPER -V in W8 then VBOX / VMWARE can't run -- you have to choose EITHER HYPER-V or the other virtualisation options such as VMWARE / VBOX.

Enc screenshot of a Windows 98 VM. Works fine on W8 x-64 Host.

@pparks1
The latest version of VMware workstation (and player) seems to have considerably improved the Virtual Graphics systems -- for example DVD playing now works decently and some games too - especially with the power with modern hardware.

Some extreme modern games won't work properly as these rely on very high power GPU's though - but running older games say from XP / Windows 2000 etc should probably run OK now (or at least most of them).

Cheers

Yep. Also got Win98 in VMware and it runs nicely.

If you enable HYPER -V in W8 then VBOX / VMWARE can't run -- you have to choose EITHER HYPER-V or the other virtualisation options such as VMWARE / VBOX.

Note that the latest VMWare (tested with Player 5) needs virtualization to be ON in the BIOS otherwise it will crash. Might be depending on the CPU you got but on my i5 and i7 laptops this is true: even some 32bit guests failed to run (Win ME, 98) There was something with 'long mode required' in the error.

After enabling VT in the BIOS all guests were running normally. This wasn't the same in VBox since we have a check-box to disable VT in VBox only and it doesn't matter if it's on or off in the BIOS. It seems VMWare will try to use the VT capabilities when available on CPU and users will be forced to enable it in the BIOS first otherwise weird crashes and error messages might be seen. It's is not difficult to do but some manufacturers like HP set the VT-x (Virtualization) to disabled by default.

These days most of CPU's have the VT capability and it's always recommended to use that if you have virtual machines, be it in VMware, VirtualBox or Hyper-V their execution performance/speed will be increased this way.

Cheers!

@jimbo, yeah I wouldn't mind getting the license upgrade to VMWare Workstation 9.x, but I'm on 8.x right now and it's doing just fine. It's $119 for me to upgrade, which is money I would rather not spend right now. I always keep my eyes open for a sale on the upgrade, if I could get it around the $79 mark I might jump on it.
